What our families say

After careful consideration we placed my mum at Ashlar in the late summer of 2025.
Having only lived in one home for the past 60 years it was a huge move for her but she is very happy there. She says that the staff are all lovely and it’s so great to see her thriving. It’s incredible really. She was so poorly when she went in but her Parkinson’s has stabilised and she has a life back.
The manager Flavia is incredibly hard working and seems to really care for all her residents and patients. Sam who does the administration is also really nice and friendly. I think Flavia was the head nurse prior to becoming the manager. I understand staff retention is high for this sector I think that’s positive and sadly unusual.
I don’t have huge experience but what I see I like and the key is that my mum is happy. My dad can visit her every day and so their partnership can still continue despite her needing to live in a different home to get the care she needs.
Thanks Flavia and the Ashlar Team. 👏

I have been a regular visitor to Ashlar House for several months and I am so impressed with all aspects of Ashlar House. The facilities are fabulous and the staff are dedicated to give excellent care. The residents benefit from many different activities and entertainment and they love to welcome visiting pets. Well done all at Ashlar House.

I highly recommend Ashlar House care home. My dad was there in his later stages of dementia and we felt confident he was well looked after. He definitely kept staff on their toes but they were always caring, skilled and professional. From the cleaners and cooks, the nurses and carers to management they were always kind and compassionate with an appropriate sense of humour. The venue itself was always clean and tidy, in good condition and is tastefully decorated. The activities are varied, regular and of good quality.

Such a lovely home. Couldnt ask for a better team - they all really do care for all residents. A safe place for loved ones. Activities are very good too... thank you 🤗

I recently visited Ashlar house and I was impressed by the friendly, family feel within the care home. The staff are incredibly warm, welcoming and accommodating. Ashlar House is very clean with lots of communal areas where the residents clearly enjoy spending time. Parking facilities are great and the location of the home is very convenient. Ashlar House is a great asset to the local community.

My father was in Ashlar House for 10 weeks last year and it was excellent in all respects.
I was so glad and lucky to find that they had a room available when I needed a place for my Uncle last August (2023). He has been there ever since and is very happy. I could 'box tick' all the good points about Ashlar, but the main difference compared with other homes that I have visited is that all of the staff really get to know all of the residents, and this is what leads to such good care being given. The nurses are concerned to make sure that residents' dignity is maintained at all times and along with the management team always embrace any concerns that family members may have, and are happy to accommodate their requirements.

I teach a weekly exercise class at Ashlar House and I can honestly say it a truly fantastic place.
The building and facilities are stunning, modern and are always spotlessly clean, the staff are professional, so kind, and always very helpful and the residents are always motivated and very happy!
I can’t recommend it highly enough!

"Every time I visit my mother, I come away feeling at peace, happy and so very thankful that we found such a wonderful home for her. Throughout her life, my mother has always been very particular and had exceptionally high expectations, so finding a home that she would be comfortable in was a huge challenge. Ashlar ticks every single box for her, and for my sister and I. The amount and variety of activities Ashlar runs, ensures that every resident can engage to whichever level they wish or are able. My mother enjoys sitting outside in the beautifully colourful, sensory courtyard garden, particularly during this sunny weather - it's her happy place! More than just a care home, Ashlar is a real family environment. The staff are so loving and caring to all the residents, you can tell it's more than just a job to them. She's been there now for two and a half years and she is the happiest I've seen her in many, many years. Thank you, Ashlar family!"

"My aunt asked to go to the toilet and had to wait an hour before she was taken. This is not acceptable. While I was there another lady asked to go to the toilet and she had to wait over two hours. It was only when I made a complaint to one member of staff, in particular, was she then taken. The member of staff said she had to wait as other nurses were seeing to other patients, but she was just doing office work and could have taken her. She was very unhelpful and said her work in the office was more important. Surely patient care should be the priority especially as they rely on the staff for everything. It is a basic human right to be able to go to the toilet and not have to wait atleast an hour to be taken."

"Due to the distance involved, we visit our friend (of over 50 years!) about three times a year. Each visit varies in timing - sometimes morning, sometimes afternoon - but we have always found the staff to be engaging with residents in a positive and warm atmosphere. Our friend has certainly benefitted from this experience and has, despite some mobility problems, happily involved herself in all activities. Thank you. Rod Allen"

"As soon as I entered Ashlar House I felt it would be the right place for my mum. Its friendly, caring, committed staff make the place it is. I think that all the staff do a fantastic job and have managed to continue to do that in extraordinarily challenging times. The home is always very clean and well presented and has a good atmosphere. Nothing is ever too much trouble and they are very responsive and open to suggestions and ideas about the care of a relative. I feel that my mum is in a very caring environment and I am grateful and glad of it."

"My dear mother has been at Barchester Ashlar House for a few years now and she couldn’t be in better hands. It’s helped us with this lockdown knowing Mum is better well cared for. We as a family can’t thank the staff enough for being Mum's family when we weren’t able to see her. Thank you all so much."

"Ashlar House is without question the best care home in the district. My husband was a resident there for just over 5 years. All the staff were so friendly and kept me in touch with what was going on day and night during the lockdown. In the last week of his life even though this was in the middle of COVID, they gave me unrestricted access to be with him. I will always be thankful to the staff that allowed me to spend the last few days of his life, (after being married for 51 years) with him. Thank you Ashlar House."

"Our neighbour has been in Ashlar House since August 2021. When we visited she was in bed in a light airy room, she was warm and comfortable and her hair had been done nicely. She has dementia but seemed relaxed and peaceful. The staff were able to tell us that she is eating and drinking well and that her responsiveness varies from day to day. We found the home warm and clean and in our neighbour's case, we felt it offers good palliative care."

"When my Mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer in September, we quickly realised that Mum would not be able to go home as she needed round the clock care, we moved Mum across from Kent into Ashlar House so she could be near us, she settled in really well and although Mums decline was rapid, the team got to know her quickly ensuring her needs were met and her tea was made properly! There was always someone for us to talk to and Mum was treated with dignity and respect especially in her final days as were we also. I will say that the activities coordinator ensured Mum ticked off a couple of her bucket list items and she kept her entertained as much as possible, Mum was going to be a VIP guest on Remembrance Sunday but unfortunately passed 10 days before. We attended in her absence and was proud to support Ashlar House. Although our time there was short I would always recommend them. Thank you all at Ashlar House for supporting my Mum and family through her final weeks."

"My mum came to Ashlar on 6 January 2021. She was quite poorly after being in hospital for a few months. Within 2 weeks of being at Ashlar, we saw a difference in mum. She looked so much better. She has now put on weight and looks so much better. She is happy, feels safe and is well cared for. The staff laugh and joke with her and make Ashlar a happy place to be. Thank you, everyone."

"I visited a resident of Ashlar House for the first time while renovations are taking place, the staff were so welcoming. I was very impressed with the layout and decor of the home. The corridors are wide and everywhere appeared bright and airy. My friend was out of her room so a member of staff went and found her. Although not a large room it was bright and clean with nice furniture. We were (I had a friend with me) impressed with the variety of daily activities which are arranged for the residents and the staff were very complimentary to our friend in her engagement with them. I haven't commented on all of the points listed and I have only experienced or observed."

"My mother has had end of life care since February so she had not moved from her bed or room. She is always clean and tidy and I feel she is always treated with respect and dignity by the excellent staff. Her room is very small and is awkward when two people visit together, she is at the end of a corridor which I feel she is quite isolated from the goings-on of the rest of the home. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ashlar House."

"My father who was suffering from Alzheimer's had been cared for at Ashlar's House in Epping for several years. The level of care that he received there was excellent and the staff not only had his interests at heart but those of the resident's relatives too. Hygiene was of the highest level and COVID provisions were put in place quickly and effectively, including a large windowed visiting room for isolation visits. Amazing!"

"My mother-in-law has been a resident at Ashlar House for about 3 weeks. Everyone at the home is so friendly and welcoming there’s a lovely refreshments area for visitors as you enter which in itself makes you feel part of the home. My mother-in-law loves the entertainment and the courtyard garden is her favourite place to sit. It is well maintained clean and tidy the lounges feel homely with a boutique hotel feel. She is starting to settle and seems genuinely pleased to see and have time with the staff who take great care of her."

"I came here with a little trepidation as I was not looking forward to seeing her in a care home. I needn't have worried. I was treated with warmth but the administration office and taken around to see the facilities. When I was taken to see my friend, her broad grin showed me how very happy she is, and the lunch that was delivered to her looked delicious. I am leaving her feeling much more at peace and knowing she has come to the right place. Wonderful!"

"My mother is being well cared for and all the staff are helpful and kind. The care home made a huge effort to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, tables outside in the sunshine on Friday 3rd June 2022. There was a band, balloons, a barbecue, face painting and lots of the residents family members attended. Everyone had fun and the residents enjoyed singing and clapping along to the music and eating ice creams from the visiting ice cream van."

"When you enter the home you are made to feel welcome and are greeted with a warm smile from the lovely receptionist. The home is always immaculate and the gardens well kept. The rooms are well-furnished and comfortable for all residents. Every room and living area is cleaned at least every day. Management are always approachable and hospitable, and their doors are always open for residents and their families to give support and advice. The carers and nurses are exceptional, nothing is ever a problem. They're always happy and treat all residents like family of their own by keeping regular routine specialized for each tenant/ patient. The catering is brilliant with 3-course meals every day whether it be in the dining room or taken individually to each patient's room. Always warm and well cooked with at least 2 choices per course. The eating area, like the rest of the home, is always spotless and just as you would want your home. Exceptional care home."

"This is the 3rd care home that Mum has been in and most certainly the best. The whole team is amazing. They always have time to talk with you and answer any questions you may have. They have always treated Mum as an individual, not just another resident, and know her likes and dislikes so can manage her care in the best way for her. The place is always spotless and the food is amazing! There is an entertainment program and relatives/carers are encouraged to join in. I cannot praise this home enough. Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do. You are all stars!"
