Activities at Upton Bay Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Karen Grant

Activities Lead, Dementia Champion

I first worked in the care sector in 2010, starting in domiciliary care and progressing to Care Coordinator. I have since gained a wealth of experience in dedicated dementia and residential activities, working as a peripatetic activities coordinator in 16 out of 20 homes within a group, and then in 2018, I was part of a team that commissioned a new luxury care home, where I was an Activities Team Leader.

I enjoy making wishes come true for residents: in February 2015, I organised my first wedding in a care home. The lady resident who was living with dementia was unable to travel to Hertfordshire for her granddaughters wedding, so I brought the wedding to her. I organised a wedding blessing at the home; we had a vicar, a choir, all of the bridal party, the flowers, a buffet, a wedding cake, champagne—the full works.

In 2017, I organised a smaller wedding in the garden, and this was a special wish for a gentleman resident to see his granddaughter married. Organising these special moments gives me a lot of pleasure, knowing I have made them feel special and to give families that happiness and see them smile.

I cannot wait to welcome our residents into their wonderful new home and help to bring smiles, joy and laughter to each day.

Karen is also one of our dementia champions

?️‍♂️Fulfilling wishes on the Fairway!?

At 97 years of age, Ray, resident at Upton Bay Care Home, dreamed of swinging a hole-in-one on the golf course after almost 20 years away from the green. So our team made his wish come true, with the help of Broadstone Golf Club.

After a few practice shots, and a masterclass from Chris, golfing pro at the club, Ray found his stride and began hitting far across the fairway, before turning his hand to the putting green and achieveing his long awaited hole-in-one.

Ray said: “I can’t believe I’m on the green again! I’d always wanted to prove to myself that even at near 100 I could still swing it, and today I’ve proved that. It’s done me the world of good!”

Friday Night Boogie!!

The entertainment doesn’t stop at Upton Bay! We welcomed back the terrific Steve Linn for an amazing outdoor concert on our Memory Lane.

Steve’s mix of tremendous tunes from the 60’s through to the 2000’s ensured there was something for every resident. Our Ladies and Gents were swinging, jiving, and even two-stepping to the music!

Ray, resident, said, “A couple of years ago I’d have been showcasing my real moves – lifting and twisting and all that!”

“He has such a wonderful voice – I feel like a schoolgirl front row at a concert!” Commented Barbara.

Life enrichment at Upton Bay is truly about making every day fun, worthwhile, person-centered. We’re ready to welcome your loved one! Call our team today on 01202 679529 to talk about our fantastic care packages.

Touring the Beautiful Beaches

Now that the beautiful winter sun is starting to show, residents at Upton Bay made the most of the break in the weather with a trip down to Rockley Point in the minibus.

Blessed to have this on our doorstep, we enjoyed an afternoon at the Harbour’s Edge beach cafe, tucking in to Dorset ice creams and hot chocolates!

Barry, resident at Upton Bay, felt right at home looking out from the coastline, having spent many years on the neighbouring Brownsea Island. “I know this place like the back of my hand, brings back good memories,” he said.

Celebrating a long and happy life!

Celebrating living life to the fullest!

With the turn of a new month, Upton Bay proudly recognised International Day of Older Persons, a global initiative through the United Nations that brings light to issues faced by older people across the world.

We have teamed up with St Mary and St Joseph’s Primary School in Dorset for an exciting intergenerational project, which aim at teaching kindness and understanding to their pupils in years 1-4. Girls and boys at the school lovingly wrote wonderful letters to our residents, sharing a bit about life as a youngster nowadays, and asking insightful questions about what our residents were like as kids!

Our ladies and gents adored the letters, and this week have been excitedly penning their replies to send back to the School. What a beautiful relationship to have within our community!

Rain doesn’t stop play!

With chilly mornings and drizzly afternoons, at Upton Bay our residents are welcoming the cosy autumn months ahead!

This week, we found lots of ways to keep entertained indoors. From raucous bingo sessions, to competitive pub quizzes, cards and dominoes, and testing our skills on the Magic Table: our residents across the home have been enjoying socialising getting to know each other a bit better!

Wine Not! Residents refresh on delicious wines from around the world!

Residents at Upton Bay thoroughly enjoyed a wine tasting masterclass hosted by Unity Wines.

We were off to Italy to try Italian Blush Rosé, a light, rosé with notes of white flowers, strawberries and cranberries, then to South Africa for an authentic Chenin Blanc. To finish, it was the turn of Spain where residents sampled Campo Viejo Rioja, filled with flavours of brambles, cinnamon a lingering toastiness.

Rosemary, resident, said, “What better way to spend a day – sipping on fine wines at 3 in the afternoon! Just delightful!”
