Activities at Southerndown Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Cathy Wheeler

Activity Co-ordinator

I have been with the team at Southerndown since 2023

People ask me what I enjoy about my job and the answer is easy... 'the people'. Its the small things that make the difference every day, seeing people smile and seeing someone respond positively to interaction. We offer a great life enrichment programme at Southerndown and every day is different but enjoyable.

In my spare time I like to spend time in the garden, I enjoy sewing but mostly love spending time with my grandchildren

Life at Southerndown Care Home

Autumn Wreaths

Warm inside the home with the autumn winds blowing outside, our residents got down to crafting, with the help of our wonderful carer Wilma they designed and shaped several seasonal wreaths.

Sun Catcher Butterflies

The Mill residents had fun with Stacey this morning, cutting and sticking brightly coloured tissue paper to strain glass effect shapes to make their own light catching butterflies for display across their community and bedrooms.

As the autumn sun shines through these creations really come to life, flooding the room with technicolour.

Blenheim Gardens Afternoon Tea

On Monday, our Blenheim Gardens residents joined together in the restaurant for afternoon tea, courtesy of their hostess; Leanne.

She laid on a selection of cakes, with freshly brewed coffee and tea for all to enjoy. During the event, Leanne provided an arts and crafts 'colour therapy' session, with aqua painting and open reading.

It was so lovely to see everyone spending quality time together, we’ve decided to make it a monthly meeting.

Our dementia friendly Blenheim Gardens community is a safe and life enriching place to stay. We're welcoming new residents and would be happy to show you and your loved one around. There's always a cuppa and slice of cake waiting for you.

Dog Show Delights

We had an absolutely wonderful day for the Southerndown ‘Dog Show’ on Saturday. It was a lovely turnout, glorious weather and very well behaved dogs too!

Our residents and staff enjoyed meeting all the two and of course our four-legged visitors. We thank the local community for making it such a fantastic day for all involved.

And the winning pooches were...

Peggie - Prettiest Bitch
Marley & Carrie - Best crossbreeds
Frampton - Most handsome dog
Pascal - Funniest face

Celebrating our Wonderful Housekeeping Team

Residents at Southerndown care home in Chipping Norton, run by Barchester Healthcare, are celebrating Housekeeping Week, which takes place from September 12-18. Residents wanted to thank all the wonderful housekeeping staff at the home, whose hard work and dedication make a real difference to the lives of those living there.

Housekeeping Week is an annual event held every year during the second week in September. The week is dedicated to recognising the efforts of hard-working housekeeping staff around the world.

Throughout the week residents and staff have reminisced about how housekeeping has changed during their lifetime, our residents talked about when they first got domestic appliances such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners, and how their lives were changed by advances in technology over the years.

Carole King, our Resident Ambassador loves to support the housekeeping team and has taken on the duty of preparing our ground floor restaurant ‘The Mill’ for all its diners. As a key member of the team, Carole joined the housekeeping staff at today’s presentation by Deputy Manager, Rosalynn Forson who gifted them all with chocolates and thank you cards from everyone at Southerndown.

Lorraine Ball, General Manager said: “It is so wonderful to be able to celebrate Housekeeping Week and thank our fantastic staff for all that they do to keep our home clean and safe for our residents, staff and visitors alike.”

Thank you team from all at Southerndown!

Church Services return to Southerndown

It was an absolute pleasure to see the return of Church Services within Southerndown care home yesterday. We give thanks to Rev. Judith Marshall and volunteer Rose for taking the time to visit from St Mary's Church, Chipping Norton

The service of worship included readings from John 15. 1-5 and, beautiful hymns; ‘Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine’, ‘Love Devine’ and ‘Come down, O Love Devine’ all musically accompanied by Rose on the keyboard.

Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the service and sang along to each hymn. After service, Judith took time to speak to our residents, many of whom were regular St Mary’s church going parishioners.

We very much look forward to the next service and spending time with Judith and Rose - their prayers and kind words lifted our hearts.
