Activities at Southerndown Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Cathy Wheeler

Activity Co-ordinator

I have been with the team at Southerndown since 2023

People ask me what I enjoy about my job and the answer is easy... 'the people'. Its the small things that make the difference every day, seeing people smile and seeing someone respond positively to interaction. We offer a great life enrichment programme at Southerndown and every day is different but enjoyable.

In my spare time I like to spend time in the garden, I enjoy sewing but mostly love spending time with my grandchildren

Reminiscence and Rock n Roll

‘If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On’

We all know music is a wonderful way to lift spirits and can be so good for continued wellbeing. For those living with dementia, music can often promote good memories and a sing along. Our Team Leader and Dementia champion; John has just donated a vintage record player to our Blenheim Gardens residents and we can’t wait to get out the vinyl records and set that needle playing!

If any of our Facebook friends have some golden oldie vinyl’s gathering dust, we’d love to give them a spin, please email our activities team on Southerndown.Activities@barchester.com we’d be happy to collect.

We’re ready to Reminiscence and Rock n Roll.

Christmas-themed Floristry Masterclass

Our staff and residents were treated to an interactive virtual Christmas-themed floristry masterclass courtesy of Master Florist, Michal Kowalski, from Blooming Haus - Floral Engineers

Blooming Haus, is one of the UK’s most innovative floral design and artisan studios. With sustainability and seasonality at the core of their designs, the duo behind Blooming Haus - Michal Kowalski and his business partner, Michael Dariane, bring a completely fresh approach to floristry and their ambition to push the boundaries of traditional floristry has laid the foundations of Blooming Haus’ success to date.

Residents; Michael and Beryl joined our Home Manager; Rosalynn and Activities Coordinator Beth to watch the live stream. They all took so many notes to share with their fellow residents during our arts & crafts session later this week.

With the larger group we will be taking inspiration from the Blooming Haus team and combining Michael and Beryl's thoughts on how to create the best Christmas Wreath.

Blooming Haus' have invited all Barchester Residents to enter into a Facebook competition judged by Michal and Michael to win Love2Shop vouchers. We'll post our entry once complete for you all to see.
