Activities at Paternoster House Care Home

Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Sandy Phillips

Activities Coordinator

Hello, my name is Sandy and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Paternoster House.  I have worked at the home for just over a year starting as part of the hospitality team, but when the opportunity to work as part of the activities team I jumped at the chance.  I have a background in working as an activities coordinator for children's activities at the local leisure centres, along with craft clubs after school and Messy play for toddlers.

I am creative and working wit the team we are all bringing new ideas for activities and events as well as still running firm favourites!  My passion is about enhancing the lives of the residents from individual time through to big celebratory events.  We ensure we plan a varied and interesting programme of activities and events.

As a team we are committed to Barchester's Life Enrichment programme ensuring we work with mind, body and soul.

Budgies with Character!

This month’s treat for residents at Paternoster House from Performing Pets were some wonderfully friendly budgies.   The beautifully colourful budgies were a massive hit with residents and what characters they all were.  The experience was second to none with happiness and smiles all round and it was surprising how many residents had owned budgies over the years.

Popular Baking Club

Baking Club is very popular with our residents and even more so the tasting of hard work with a cuppa!  It was lovely to hear how everyone had baked with their own children and grandchildren and as well as everyone’s childhood memories of licking the bowl clean of the cake mixture! The team went round the whole home so everyone could have the opportunity to stir the mix.

Visit to White Water Rafting Centre

Paternoster House residents had a lovely walk around at the Lee Valley White Water Centre.  We were made so welcome chatting to the wonderful lady on reception as well as a lovely  man in a kayak offering to take us for a dip!  We admired their bravery on such a crisp January day, although cold the sun on our faces was so nice and great to get out in the fresh air.  You never know we might venture in when it is warmer!

Community Spirit

There has been such warmth and generosity from the local community this Christmas.  A massive thank you to those who donated to the Community Christmas wish list at Waltham Abbey Tesco, your kind generosity means so much to our residents and thank you to Michelle Moore, the Community Champion you are a true star for making this possible.

We also had a lovely surprise visit from the Wishing Well Nursery who wanted to deliver Christmas biscuits and wish our residents a Merry Christmas along with a special message saying they are looking forward to visiting us again in 2024 for their weekly session of singing and playing with their friends at the home.

Wilson the Walaby Settles into Paternoster House!

Paternoster House had a very unusual Christmas visitor, Wilson the white wallaby!  Performing Pets who bought along the special visitor explained the significance of white wallabies at Christmas, in Australia legend has it that Santa swapped his six reindeer for six white wallabies.  Wilson enjoyed exploring, but was equally happy cuddling up to residents and staff.  His fur was beautifully soft and like so many animals had real intuition as he calmly sat on residents’ beds and was very gentle.

Waltham Abbey Support Special Visit

Paternoster House residents had a surprise visit from Santa and his helpers. The visit soon turn into a party with everyone on their feet singing and dancing!  Santa even managed to find time for some individual room visits for the residents who were unable to come out and dance.  We would like to say a big thank you everyone from Waltham Abbey Support for making this happen and bringing some festive fun.
