Activities at Overslade House Care Home

Our activities team is dedicated to organising a variety of events and activities and adapting them to suit the capabilities of those we support. Our goal is to improve quality of life by providing activities that are tailored to residents' own interests.

At Overslade House, we encourage local people and businesses to participate, as well as our staff and relatives, in order to keep them involved as part of a wider community. We strive to enhance the quality of both mental and physical stimulation through weekly minibus excursions, PAT dogs, quizzes, Zumba classes, arm chair line dancing, musical entertainers, pamper sessions and much more.

We definitely have something for everyone!

Julie Bateman

Activities Lead

Hi, my name is Julie, and I'm the lead Activities Lead here at Overslade House. I've been an entertainer for over 25 years which has given me a great foundation for meeting people from various backgrounds, and has also helped nurture my social skills.

I love animals, and have two Dachshunds of my own who, like me, love meeting new people. I'm looking forward to bringing them in to meeting all our lovely residents here at Overslade.

I'm a bit of a social butterfly and enjoy visiting National Trust locations, attending the Theatre, singing and dining out. Over the years I've even been an 'extra' on TV!

Living life to the full is my motto, and I wish to instil this in all our residents, whatever your ability there is something new to learn or try. Life is for enriching and enjoyment. I look forward to getting to know you and your loved ones. We are always open to new ideas, if you'd like to contact me please call the home on 01788 522577 or email me direct on overslade.activities@barchester.com - New entertainers always welcome.

Weekend Hand Pampering

Our wonderful lady residents received a magnificent manicure from 'Roxy' over the weekend; hand massage, nail file and polish - colour of your choice! Don't they look beautiful. Simple sensory acts of kindness like these mean so much to our residents, what lady doesn't love a touch of pampering?

Flower Arranging brings Smiles

We wish to send a 'Big Thank You' to Ally, Community Champion at Asda Rugby for providing several bouquets for our residents. She knows just how fulfilling it can be to cut, and arrange these beautiful blooms. The sense of achievement, and smiles in creating their own displays is just wonderful - Thank you Ally.

Triple 'Long Service' Award Celebrations

This week started with a triple award ceremony at Overslade House. Residents and staff gathered in the café for an afternoon tea with a difference, to celebrate the wonderful achievement of 3 members of staff receiving their prestigious Barchester Healthcare - Long Service Awards.

Karen Atkinson, Housekeeping, started at Barchester in April 2001 and over the past 20-years has worked tirelessly with the housekeeping team to ensure our home is kept immaculate for our residents, staff and visitors.

Maria Jandoc, Care Practitioner and Dorota Wrobel, Kitchen Assistant each celebrate 10-years’ service, joining the Barchester family in April 2011. Maria has the biggest of hearts and smiles, she is devoted to caring for our residents.

Dorota works within the hospitality team, alongside her kitchen colleagues, she always takes time to understand our residents’ likes and dislike to ensure their taste and nutritional needs are met.

Our home manager; Violeta Baesu, said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating these amazing ladies loyal service with Barchester and our home. They have each demonstrated their dedication and loyalty to this home and its residents year after year. I speak for all of us here at Overslade House when I say that I’m looking forward to many more years of working with them all!”

The Queens Birthday and National Tea Day

Yesterday on 21st April, we celebrated the Queens' 95th birthday with a special afternoon tea with a fresh 'strawberries & cream' cake courtesy of chef, and watched big-screen showings of 'The Story of Queen Elizabeth II' across all communities.

Our residents are very patriotic, and wanted to send Her Majesty all the very best wishes, and to say she is in our thoughts.

We combined the celebrations with National Tea Day, whereby our residents had the opportunity to taste a number of tea varieties including; Pure Peppermint, Lemon & Ginger and Earl Grey. The majority preferred a good old Tetley tea!

To send thanks to our community friends our residents helped package up some 'Tea & Biscuit' parcels. We do hope they can all can take a well-deserved break, and enjoy a cuppa on us.

Virtual Tour Sea Life London Aquarium

Our residents have embraced the virtual world over this past year and today, in large screen and technicolour, they wondered through the SEA LIFE London Aquarium.

Hosted by Senior Curator, James Wright and his expert team. James’ presentation featured getting up close and personal with SEA LIFE London Aquarium’s colony of Gentoo Penguins, residents were able to watch feeding time for Green Sea turtles and numerous sharks!

Our residents love finding out about new things and they are all especially interested in animals so we were delighted to be able to watch this presentation.  We had so many questions, it was brilliant to be able to ask James and his team all about their experiences of working with the different creatures.

Saying Goodbye to HRH Prince Philip

Many of our residents gathered in the Overslade lounges and their rooms to pay our respects to His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on Saturday. All agreeing the service was a dignified and beautiful 'goodbye and thank you' to the Prince.

We fell silent alongside the Queen, and the Royal family as we watched the whole ceremony, it was very moving to hear many of our residents hum softly to the National Anthem.

Rest in Peace - HRH Prince Philip
