Activities at Overslade House Care Home

Our activities team is dedicated to organising a variety of events and activities and adapting them to suit the capabilities of those we support. Our goal is to improve quality of life by providing activities that are tailored to residents' own interests.

At Overslade House, we encourage local people and businesses to participate, as well as our staff and relatives, in order to keep them involved as part of a wider community. We strive to enhance the quality of both mental and physical stimulation through weekly minibus excursions, PAT dogs, quizzes, Zumba classes, arm chair line dancing, musical entertainers, pamper sessions and much more.

We definitely have something for everyone!

Julie Bateman

Activities Lead

Hi, my name is Julie, and I'm the lead Activities Lead here at Overslade House. I've been an entertainer for over 25 years which has given me a great foundation for meeting people from various backgrounds, and has also helped nurture my social skills.

I love animals, and have two Dachshunds of my own who, like me, love meeting new people. I'm looking forward to bringing them in to meeting all our lovely residents here at Overslade.

I'm a bit of a social butterfly and enjoy visiting National Trust locations, attending the Theatre, singing and dining out. Over the years I've even been an 'extra' on TV!

Living life to the full is my motto, and I wish to instil this in all our residents, whatever your ability there is something new to learn or try. Life is for enriching and enjoyment. I look forward to getting to know you and your loved ones. We are always open to new ideas, if you'd like to contact me please call the home on 01788 522577 or email me direct on overslade.activities@barchester.com - New entertainers always welcome.

Day Trip to the Local

Another road trip for our residents, this time to the Clifton Inn. Our intrepid group braved the weathers to meet Landlord; Ram who was an amazing host. He couldn’t be more welcoming, and Ellena was so attentive to our groups needs throughout the visit. We are all in agreement that as soon as we can return and book a table inside his beautiful establishment, we’ll be there - the menu looks fantastic!

Goodbye Gemma

We have had the pleasure of working with Nurse; Gemma Kershaw since January 2021. She joined Overslade House as our Clinical Development Nurse in April, working across all communities to support our nurse and care teams.

We are both pleased, and sad to be saying goodbye to her as she embarks on a new journey, becoming a Quality Performance Manager. Good luck and best wishes Gemma; do come a visit us when you're back in the area.

International Nurses Day

Annually, on 12th May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth, we celerate 'International Nurses Day'. A global event that acknowledges and praises the commitment and bravery of nurses around the world.

Today, the residents of Overslade House wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to the nurses within our home, and those of The Hospital of St Cross; Cedar Ward for their continued dedication to the protection and health of our community.

We received a beautiful array of flowers donated by Ally from Asda and our residents and activities team decided to spend the morning making small bouquets to regift with love for #internationalnursesday  We truly can’t thank our Barchester and NHS nurses enough for all have done, and continue to do.

Mental Wellness & Vegetarian Week

In support of Mental Health awareness week our Tuesday morning exercise session came courtesy of 'The Green Goddess'; Diana Moran who delighted our residents with wellbeing talks and motivating movements to start the day.

In the afternoon we attended a live cooking demonstration with professional Chef Alex Connell from 'Vegetarian For Life' V for Life who prepared, and talked us through a variety of vegetarian dishes.

Our wonderful in house chef Dario and kitchen team had followed the same recipes just before the live event, meaning our residents could taste each dish as if they were being served by Chef Alex himself! Simply delicious.

Wraps for Vegetarian Week

The wellness and enrichment of our residents within Overslade House is so important. During what is National Vegetarian, and Mental Health Awareness Week (10 - 16 May 2021) our activities team prepared a selection of chopped fruit and vegetables for our memory lane residents to sample.

As they created their own mini artworks on fresh wraps, they all agreed blueberry’s go very well with tomatoes!

First Day Trip of 2021

What a difference a day out makes! On Monday we had our first resident minibus excursion in over a year.

It was such an exciting time for the group. They decided we should visit The Boat Restaurant & Bar to view the canal and passing barges heading to and from Stockton locks. Our residents really enjoyed the route through Dunchurch, where Doreen remarked on how things have changed over the years. She recalled having many a lovely lunch with her husband at The Dun Cow, and walking around Draycote Water.

We were very lucky with the good old British weather and managed to park up and take a seat outside The Boat between rain showers. The pub location is so beautiful; we’ll definitely be back for lunch once the weather improves, next time bringing some snacks for its visiting ducks!
