Activities at Oak Grange Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Residents have been super active for Senior Health and Fitness Day participating in a variety of activities throughout the day designed for a wide range of physical abilities, including walking, dance yoga, tai chi, and armchair exercise.

Created to inspire senior-friendly physical activity, the national day was launched to increase awareness of the importance of remaining active to maintain strong, healthy joints and muscles, and to encourage diet and lifestyle changes for an overall improvement to wellbeing, and illness prevention.

Residents spent the day trying out taster sessions for a whole host of different activities, there were group classes such as walking, yoga and Pilates.  Some residents tried tai chi in the garden whilst others embarked on some armchair exercises.  There were several dance classes on offer, some residents tried ballet whilst others sampled some Zumba moves

A Floral Masterclass

Here at Oak Grange we were delighted to spend time creating a beautiful floral masterpiece to enter the #BloomingBarchester competition in partnership with Blooming Haus following their amazing virtual flower arranging masterclass.

We all had a wonderful time decorating and working on our arrangement and we are happy to say we were impressed with our skills in applying all the tips and ideas learnt during the class to make a colourful floral design

Home have Bee-rilliant time for World Bee Day

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Oak Grange care home in Mollington Grange were buzzing when they celebrated World Bee Day on May 20th.

Created by the UN, World Bee Day is an annual global event raising awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping for the survival of our ecosystems.  Three out of four food crops across the globe rely on bees and other pollinators but those pollinators are under threat from human activities.

Residents had a bee-rilliant time learning about the history of bee-keeping and the importance of bees for food production, looking at a local bee keeper virtually and enjoying a tour of their hives, holding a tasting of local honey, making a bee home for the garden and planting some bee friendly flowers in the garden.

All aboard - V&A Dundee Ocean Liners

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Oak Grange in Mollington were treated to a photographic tour and talk about the era of ocean travel by V&A Dundee Curator, Charlotte Hale.  The presentation forms part of a series of six talks and virtual tours that V&A Dundee is hosting for Barchester Healthcare’s care homes and private hospitals across the UK.

V&A Dundee is Scotland’s design museum, it showcases Scotland’s outstanding design achievements and features world-class exhibitions alongside the permanent Scottish Design Galleries, and a changing programme of commissions, events and activities.

National Vegetarian Week

To celebrate National Vegetarian Week, staff and residents at Barchester’s Oak Grange care home in Mollington were treated to an interactive virtual cookery demo courtesy of chef, Alex Connell, from Vegetarian for Life.

Chef Alex whipped up some tasty, healthy vegetarian snacks in a live, interactive cookery demo.  Much to residents’ delight, Strachan House head chef had prepared the same recipes so that residents could try all the dishes. Residents sampled delicious, light and summery veggie dishes including Borlotti bean and dill pate, Greek fritters with Tzatziki and Coronation 'chicken' pastries. All finished off with a sweet and simple but totally yummy banana bread.

Alex says “It was an absolute pleasure to be able to prepare these dishes for the Barchester residents and even more so because they got to taste them, despite my not being able to be there in person. Thanks to all the chefs in Barchester homes across the country who supported me to deliver this really lovely activity.”
