Activities at Leeming Bar Grange Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Kimberley Calvert

Senior Activities Coordinator

Hi my name is Kimberley, Senior Activities Coordinator, and here at Leeming Bar our life enrichment programme is varied, providing choice for our residents and incorporating their interests and hobbies.  We all know that keeping active is important. We have created a wonderful culture within Leeming Bar, and we work together to give residents the best possible experience.

We are here to ensure that residents enjoy an environment that is both stimulating and socially active. We ensure the team knows each residents' preferences, so that we can deliver a person-centred program of events and activities. Essential to our homely feel is the strong relationships of trust we build with residents, and their families and friends.

Life at Leeming Bar Grange Care Home

St Patrick's Day

Residents and staff at Leeming Bar Grange in Leeming Bar celebrated all things Irish for St Patrick’s Day this week. The home was decorated with handmade shamrocks and rainbows with everyone dressed in green to mark the day.  Held on March 17th, Saint Patrick's Day actually observes the death of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, but the day has come to be a huge celebration of Irish heritage and culture.

It was a day of great craic as residents, loved ones, and the team enjoyed a silent disco filled with Irish shenanigans; with the gold at the end of our rainbow being an array of delicious sweet treats at the homes bake sale to raise funds for comic relief; which also fell on St Patrick’s Day this year. Following the enthusiastic jigging to The Irish Rover residents of course par-took in a refreshing Guinness or two

General Manager, Michelle Keep said: “Our residents have all had a brilliant day today, everyone has enjoyed the festivities – I think we all agree St Patrick’s Day is the best of all the saints’ days!  We had a fantastic time dancing to Irish ditties and all the classics; and of course eating plenty of cake!

A walk on the wild side

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Leeming Bar Grange care home in Leeming Bar took a walk on the wild side when they celebrated UN World Wildlife Day on 3rd March.

World Wildlife Day is an annual global event to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants.  World Wildlife Day 2023 is celebrated under the theme ‘Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation’ to highlight the people who are making a difference and celebrate all conservation efforts from marine life and our oceans to collaborations with businesses which are helping to reverse the loss in biodiversity on our planet through sustainability and wildlife protection.

Residents had a brilliant time as they were transported to the jungle with a visit from Aquatic Finatic pet therapy. Residents and the team impressed themselves as they got up close and personal with the likes of Busby the python, Storm Cloud the chinchilla, Sheila the bearded dragon, plus many more interesting animals!

Historic Royal Palaces

Our residents were treated to a special virtual sensory storytelling session.  Together with Art Historian Jon Sleigh and the Historic Royal Palaces community team, we explored several royal palaces through the theme of food, dining and celebration!

We enjoyed a fantastic taste-a-long experience from the comfort of our home, from Tudor treats to Stuart sweets. A lovely time was had by all.

Book Club Corner

Across our services, our residents had a lovely time joining Mark Piesing for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘N-4 Down: The Hunt for The Arctic Airship Italia’.

Our residents were thrilled to find out more about the book and the fascinating story of the world-famous exploring airship Italia, returning from the North Pole on May 24, 1928. The airship was struck by a terrible storm and crashed somewhere over the Arctic ice, triggering the largest polar rescue mission in history.

The virtual book club experience was truly enjoyed by all.

Minibus Adventures

Residents were whisked away on the homes mini bus to Preston Park museum where they were transported back in time!

Residents loved exploring the range of galleries, reminiscing fondly of memories from times gone by, such as using a mangle and dolly, and many items being recognised from times with their grandparents!

As we strolled down the Victorian street we of course couldn't resist nipping in the tea rooms for a brew & delicious slice of lemon drizzle cake!

Love is in the Air!

Love was in the air as we celebrated our loved ones & each other!

Whilst Valentine's Day traditionally celebrates romantic love, we used this opportunity to celebrate our love for one another & the beautiful friendships that blossom so effortlessly in the home. Our Valentine's soirée saw crooner Laurie Bennet serenade us with our favourite love songs; as residents indulged in bubbles & sweet treats.

As we danced and sang our hearts out it really was with true sincerity that we sang "I can't help falling in love with you"; appreciating the beauty that each & every individual brings to the home.

As one lovely lady remarked; "a wonderful day filled with wonderful people"

Cheers to love in all it's wonderful forms!
