Activities at Kirkburn Court Care Home

Here at Kirkburn Court, we aim to facilitate a personalised programme of meaningful activities, which are designed to promote independence, social stimulation and cognitive function. We strive to create a comfortable and safe environment where fun, creativity and individuality are encouraged. We feel it is important for us and residents to place value on yesterday, today and tomorrow – which is why we invest heavily in getting to know residents and learning their life history.

Our inclusive, yet respectful ethos is reflected in the wide range of activities we offer – ranging from larger structured group activities to one-to-one sessions. Our monthly activity programmes are extremely varied, but some of the activities you may expect to find include concerts, crafts, games, exercise sessions, reminiscing and outings. We also have a strong relationship with the local community and often invite external guests into the home, including performers, schools, and choirs.

Claire Burden

Activities Coordinator

I began my career with Barchester in December 2017. Having worked within the teaching profession for the preceding 8 years, I feel that I bring a range of transferable skills to the activities team.

I strongly believe that the provision of activities is about so much more than just structured, planned events – capturing and celebrating the little moments in daily life, such as enjoying a chat and a cup of tea together, are equally as important.

Activities, no matter how big or small, should be at the heart of every home and that individuality should be celebrated. In addition, I feel that activities should take a person-centred approach, which is why I enjoy spending time with the residents and learning about their preferences and their history.

My own interests include football, politics, crafting and drinking tea, and I enjoy nothing better than engaging with residents on these topics! I aim to bring energy, a friendly smile and a willing ear to the home each day.

Life at Kirkburn Court Care Home

Vegetarian for life demo

We had a lovely time joining Chef Alex Connell from Vegetarian for Life for a Halloween-inspired virtual cooking demo.

Alex demonstrated how to prepare a few themed dishes, such as root vegetable tagine, roasted butternut squash mac-n-cheese, chocolate pots with piped biscuits and flapjacks.

Our residents were delighted to be a part of this lovely virtual culinary session by tasting the vegetarian dishes from the comfort of our home.

Bus trips

Our Mystery Bus Trips have continued during October and our residents have enjoyed touring around various locations and taking in the lovely scenery of the Buchan area. As the weather has turned a bit chillier now, our bus is fully prepped with all the essentials – blankets, hand muffs and warm drinks with cake! Our residents have continued to throughly enjoy visiting many local landmarks that they remember and subsequently sharing some lovely stories and memories.

Wild things

During October, we have continued our link up with a local organisation called Wild Things, who have kindly been sending us some craft and nature resources to use. Our residents have made wooden coasters using some pressed flowers which we collected a few weeks ago. There were some lovely personalised designs created and they have certainly brightened up the residents rooms. We have also tried our hand at planting some seeds. We have parsley, coriander, broad beans and chives. Many of our green fingered residents expertly prepared the pots, soil and seeds and shared quite a few gardening tips along the way. We also discussed the various recipes that we could use our produce in!

World Food Day

As part of our World Food Day activities in October, we dropped off some donations to our local Foodbank in Peterhead. Our resident, Sandy, was delighted to present the staff with our donations on behalf of all our staff and residents. Over the last 18 months, we have been shown some amazing generosity by our local community, so we were delighted in turn to support such a great community facility who do a fantastic job! We also had great fun during a touch test game of guess the food. Great hilarity ensued as residents put their hand in our ‘Feely Tub’ to see if they could guess the food item!

A lesson in creative writing

We had a great time joining journalist and novelist, Mike Gayle, for an intriguing virtual interview, during which he shared top tips for creative writing with our residents and read passages from his latest book, All the Lonely People.

We were thrilled to find out about Mike’s background, to understand what led him to become a writer and his creative process.

It was a lovely talk, enjoyed by all, especially by our keen writers at the home.

All aboard with Unilever

We had a lovely time joining Paul Hawkins and Lisa Richards from Unilever for an exciting Virtual Cruise experience.

Our residents were welcomed with mocktails as Lisa and Paul took them on a magical journey to 3 mystery destinations, which were uncovered after a few clues.

Paul demonstrated how to create a few of the local traditional dishes, which our residents had the opportunity to try too.

The event evoked lots of great memories and it was truly enjoyed by all.
