Life at Kingsland House Care Home

Fish & Chips

Staff and residents had a fantastic time celebrating National Fish & Chip Day on Fryday 4th June, surely one of the best days of the year!

Head Chef, Vali Neagu, whipped up a selection of different flavoured batters for residents to try, along with some home-made tartar sauce. E

veryone had a great time guessing the different batter ingredients. The sun was shining, so residents took to the garden to eat their fish and chips in paper cones with wooden forks in a time-honoured tradition. Later on, they enjoyed a quiz, where they were tested on fun fish & chip facts.

Out & About

Residents were celebrating being able to go on trips out again as lockdown restrictions ease across the country. Residents are now able to go on a short trip with their designated visitor without having to isolate on their return.

Residents enjoyed a long-awaited trip with their named visitor to where they were able to go for a walk and enjoy the outside.

Armchair Exercise

Staff and residents were treated to an armchair work out, courtesy of the Green Goddess, Diana Moran, and Shackleton’s furniture company, followed by a mindfulness session led by Shackleton’s Emma Raybould.

Diana rose to fame as a glamorous fitness guru on BBC’s Breakfast Time in the 1980s and has made an outstanding contribution to improving the health and well-being of people in the UK. She now brings that experience to Shackletons as their Health and Wellness Adviser.

Royal Celebrations

Kingsland House marked the Queen’s 95th birthday on April 21st in style by brewing up a storm for National Tea Day and having an afternoon tea party.

St George's Day

It was all dragons and roses all round at Kingsland House, as residents and staff celebrated St George’s Day. Legend has it that St George was a soldier in the Roman army who slayed a dragon and saved a princess. The anniversary of his death is celebrated as England’s national day.

In honour of the patron saint of England, staff and residents at the home marked the day with staff learning to Morris dance, the Kingsland Tavern was open for business so that a favourite tipple could be had; giving the celebrations a gourmet twist.

Fashion Icon Mary Quant

Staff and residents were treated to a virtual talk on Zoom about Mary Quant’s influence on the world of fashion by V&A Dundee curator, Mhairi Maxwell.  The talk forms part of a series of six talks and virtual tours that V&A Dundee is hosting for Barchester Healthcare’s care homes and private hospitals across the UK. Residents could choose to watch on their tablets or the bigger screen in the Lounge.

V&A Dundee is Scotland’s design museum, it showcases Scotland’s outstanding design achievements and features world-class exhibitions alongside the permanent Scottish Design Galleries, and a changing programme of commissions, events and activities.

Mhairi’s talk and virtual tour of the Quant exhibition, which was previously hosted by V&A Dundee, describes how Quant captured the spirit of the swinging sixties and pioneered a business model that reshaped the industry, making designer fashion far more accessible for women (and men!) than ever before. Residents learnt about Quant’s career and influences, the personal stories behind some of the stylish outfits in the exhibition, the #SewQuant campaign and even got to peek behind the scenes of the exhibition’s design.

“Mary Quant kick-started the fashion revolution in this country and what we wear today is still hugely influenced by her, it was a privilege to be able to share her story with the residents at Barchester Healthcare who would have been wearing her ground-breaking designs back in the Sixties,” Mhairi said.

Lucy Tomlinson, Resident Experience Manager for Barchester Healthcare, commented: ““We have been using technology to keep our residents and patients connected with their loved ones as well as offer virtual events, entertainment and activities throughout the pandemic.  We are excited to work with our wonderful partners like V&A Dundee to bring a wide range of fantastic experiences into our homes for all to enjoy, particularly as this talk provided such a lovely opportunity for all to reminisce about their memories of fashion in the 1960s.
