Activities at Kernow House Care Home

Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.

Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.

Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.

Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.

Life at Kernow House Care Home

Spring Planting

This school term we have carried on working with St Catherine’s school doing intergenerational work supported by the Sensory Trust. It has been such good fun and a real pleasure making this little wheelbarrow for the school. Residents firstly stuck adhesive insects on to the sides of the wheelbarrow and then planted it with flowers and vegetables. There are also a few surprises for the children to find. We then took the little spring garden around the home so all residents could see it.

Snowdon Hikers

We have some amazing staff at Kernow House. Earlier in the year Ali, Gosia, Jade, Sharon, Rachel, Jo and Morgana climbed Mount Snowdon to raise money for the Huntington’s Association. They raised an amazing £1700. The girls have now been nominated as ‘Fundraising Group of the Year’ in the Huntington’s Disease Association Awards 2022. We wish them good luck and celebrate their success.

Easter Baking

We have taken part in Barchester’s Easter Cake competition and have been busy baking cakes. We entered the Residents’ Category with a sponge cake decorated as a birds nest and the Chef’s entry was a traditional Simnel cake decorated with fresh herbs and spring flowers. Baking together is great but it’s even better when we get to eat delicious cakes.

Advisory Group

We are taking part in intergenerational work and are part of an advisory group for the @Sensory Trust. Every two months we take part in a Zoom meeting with children from two schools and adults who have a special interest in doing research. We gather information about the value of intergenerational work and hope to shape the future when it comes to working together between generations. It’s great to have a voice and be heard.

Something for the mind

Gloria Worth donated some jigsaws to the residents. Thank you very much for thinking of us! Some residents really enjoy doing jigsaws or solving other types of puzzles like word searches or Sudoku. We have easy access to a large variety of those on Omph!OnDemand! and many of them are themed.

Global Talking Tea Party

As part of Nutrition & Hydration Week we had a tea party. There was everything residents had asked for: cucumber sandwiches, sausage rolls, jam tarts, Victoria sponge and scones with jam and cream. Soft options were available for those who needed it. Zoe’s Cabaret came along to sing and entertain and we spent a wonderful afternoon having a tea dance. It was just what we needed!
