Our team

The diverse and multi-talented team here may all have different roles to play and duties to undertake when at work, but we all have one common goal: to make Kernow House feel like home to residents. Whilst the nursing and care team are busy delivering high quality personalised care to those we support, there is an equally busy team working behind the scenes ensuring that the environment is clean, comfortable, safe and well-maintained, that windows are cleaned, newspapers ordered, activities and events organised, the vehicles are serviced, the gardens nurtured, the staff trained and, very importantly, that the food is delicious. Through our combined efforts, we strive to ensure that each person staying with us feels secure, comfortable and enjoys their time here.

Careen Harris

General Manager

Hi, my name is Careen, and I am the General Manager here at Kernow.

I have been nursing for 35 years and have spent most of my career in the private, nursing home sector.

Although I am an 'old school' RGN my interest and passion lies with dementia and complex mental health care; it is these that have guided my career and further study choices.
I now hold post registration qualifications in nursing, training, education, dementia and management which along with my experience have equipped me to deal with the day to day issues inherent in running a busy nursing home.

I have worked at Kernow House, in various roles, for the past eleven years and relish the fact that no two days are the same.

My role is to lead my team to deliver the consistent, high quality and individualised care that our residents deserve and I am proud to work with a team who share my enthusiasm for providing this.

Our care

Kernow House is committed to the delivery of person-centred care to every individual who we support. Our home specialises in caring for working age or older adults living with Huntington's or advanced dementia. We understand that every individual we care for is on a journey - one that isn't always easy and which will inevitably lead to change. That's why our environment and staff teams have been tailored to meet those evolving needs. Our Millaton service for individuals with Huntington's disease is divided into two areas, each equipped to deal with different stages of the condition. It has an enviable reputation as a centre of specialism; we work closely with the HDA and local support groups to ensure that we offer the latest evidence-based care for this specialism. Our complex dementia facility, Memory Lane community and higher dependency dementia nursing unit, ensure that each resident can be cared for in an environment that suits their needs at that time by a team who, through training and experience, understand how to respond to the different situations that arise from people living with dementia.
