Activities at Kernow House Care Home

Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.

Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.

Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.

Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.

Animal Therapy

Dude, the rescue pony, came to visit for some animal therapy. Dude, who is a five year old Shetland cross Dartmoor pony from The Hugs Foundation paid a visit. The foundation is a little charity that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes ponies and horses. We enjoyed spending time with Dude in the carpark. He was really calm and liked being touched. Some residents fed him fresh grass from the lawn and he loved that. Dude will return in a few weeks, and then he will visit residents inside. Can’t wait.

Book Lovers Day

It was Book Lovers Day at Kernow House. We chose to read extracts from Jane Nancarrow’s book ‘Stones and Shadows’. The book is about the murder of Charlotte Dymond, who was killed on April 14th 1844 close to Roughtor on Bodmin Moor, so before we read about her murder, we took a bus trip to the moor, so we could see where the story was set. After reading and discussing the story, we read Charles Causley’s ‘The Ballad of Charlotte Dymond’. A really enjoyable time for everyone, who has been part of the adventures.

Drums4Fun

Drums4Fun brought their percussion workshop to us. Graham Kemp came along to run a workshop with us. There was singing, dancing and lots of laughter as residents and staff enjoyed an afternoon playing drums, maracas and all sorts of percussion instruments. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be the best musicians, Graham.

A Royal Visit

Prince Charles and Camilla visited Launceston and we were there. We couldn’t all go but Debbie and Roy went to the town square with Jackie and Bea. It started out with lovely sunshine but soon got a little wet. We enjoyed a fantastic atmosphere with our community and saw the town band and lots of children dancing right by us. We also saw lots of police, motorbikes, the mayor and town crier and of course the royal couple. It is great to be part of community events like this.

Creativity

We are getting regular deliveries of art and craft materials from Creative Mojo and sometimes we feel so inspired that we have art sessions where we get together and have a go at something. This time it was making glittery flowers.

Trips Out

We are so fortunate to have two minibuses and fantastic places to drive to. Residents usually choose the destination and the sea side is a firm favourite, especially when there is no one else on the beach.
