Activities at Kernow House Care Home

Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.

Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.

Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.

Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.

Easter at Kernow House

We have had some fun preparing for Easter by making decorations for our ornamental tree. Some of the young people who have visited, dipped egg shells in ink for a marble effect before hanging them on the tree along with little chicks. It was very effective and an unusual decoration. We also had an Easter Service delivered by Sheila Burt and on Good Friday, the Easter Bunny made an early appearance with friends to deliver hot cross buns and bunches of daffodils. We think we have spotted the real Easter Bunny in the garden, so there will be Easter eggs for everyone.

Zoe’s Cabaret

Zoe's Cabaret came back for an afternoon of singing and dancing. Richard loves singing with Zoe and other residents join in for a song or two. We dance and have lots of fun. There’s a real party atmosphere when Zoe visits and friendships are made between residents on different units. We look forward to Zoe coming back again in a couple of months.

Nutrition and Hydration Week

As part of Nutrition & Hydration Week we had a Global Talking Tea Party. Chef prepared a delicious afternoon tea with finger sandwiches and little cakes. There was live music with Gareth Hedges playing guitar and singing. We all sang along and really enjoyed a great afternoon. We even had an uninvited guest in the form of a black cat, who lives close by but spends a lot of time where the party was. The cat even helped itself to a bit of cake and provided more entertainment for us. (But sadly we had to throw the rest away)

Cornish Pasty Week

This week for Cornish Pasty Week, we celebrated by making a giant proper Tiddioggie which the chef prepared for us. It had the traditional filling in one end and a fruit flavoured filling in the other. We talked about the history of the Cornish Pasty and, most importantly we all had a taste which went down very well. When we had finished eating the gigantic Oggy, there was just the crust left, exactly as it should be.

World Book Day

On World Book Day we chose to read extracts from Daphne Du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn. It is a scary tale of smuggling, set on Bodmin Moor, quite close to us. After reading part of the book and Sue retelling the story, some residents went for a drive to discover some of the places mentioned in the book. We drove to the moor, saw picturesque places with snowdrops, Roughtor, Brown Willy and Jamaica Inn itself. It was a beautiful day and a very atmospheric drive. We were all very happy to return home without meeting any smugglers or wreckers.

Pancake Day

On Shrove Tuesday we had a great time tossing pancakes as well as making and eating the best pancakes ever. We started in the morning with pancakes on Petherwin and carried on throughout the home for the rest of the day. There were pancakes for everyone with a choice of fillings. The most unusual one was sugar and vinegar but sugar and lemon remain a firm favourite.
