Activities at Harper Fields Care Home

There is always something to do here at Harper Fields and always someone to assist the residents in any activity they wish to take part in. We have entertainers come into the home to sing and play instruments on a weekly basis, as well as visits from PAT dogs, hairdressers, massage therapists and nail technicians to pamper those who live here. Residents' spiritual needs are taken into account at Harper Fields; we have regular services from the Catholic and Methodist church, in addition to the Church of England, and for our non-religious residents, we have a weekly calming and peaceful ‘mindfulness and meditation group,’ which is very popular, especially for those living with dementia. Residents often like to attend cinema evenings to watch their favourite films on the big screen (complete with sweets and popcorn), or develop new skills at our computer classes, where they can learn how to Skype their families in other countries. Our activities are tailored to suit the individual interests and capabilities of residents and our specialised equipment enables those we support to enjoy everything we have to offer.

Life at Harper Fields Care Home

Pygmy Goats visit Harper fields

Sheena is a  goat farmer fairly local to Harper fields so we were delighted when she called to say she wanted to bring River & Summer in to the home for a visit. When I told our residents about the visit, I was met with lots of oohs & ahh’s. Although we have quite a few Farmers reside at Harper fields, we haven’t actually had a pygmy Farmer. Residents were allowed to feed the goats with apples, carrots & dried fruit.  “What super pets can we keep them” said Sylvia. One of our memory lane residents. The Pygmy Goats trotted around to all the residents bedrooms and communal areas. We will definitely be having them back.

Historic Royal Palaces

Our residents were treated to a special virtual sensory storytelling session.  Together with Art Historian Jon Sleigh and the Historic Royal Palaces community team, we explored several royal palaces through the theme of food, dining and celebration!

We enjoyed a fantastic taste-a-long experience from the comfort of our home, from Tudor treats to Stuart sweets. A lovely time was had by all.

Book Club Corner

Across our services, our residents had a lovely time joining Mark Piesing for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘N-4 Down: The Hunt for The Arctic Airship Italia’.

Our residents were thrilled to find out more about the book and the fascinating story of the world-famous exploring airship Italia, returning from the North Pole on May 24, 1928. The airship was struck by a terrible storm and crashed somewhere over the Arctic ice, triggering the largest polar rescue mission in history.

The virtual book club experience was truly enjoyed by all.

Mini bus trip to Heart of England school in Balsall common

Theatre group Centre stage, who are all local, put on The pantomime ‘Robin Hood’. We had an absolutely wonderful afternoon. The cast were awesome from age 8 – 80, they were all superstars. We did giggle at the young ‘Beavers’ in the front row booing and cheering. Brought back some great memories of taking our own children to the annual pantomime.

A visit from the Brownies

Harper fields residents were delighted when the girls from the 4th Balsall common Brownies challenged them to a Beetle drive. The girls were so patient teaching us oldies how to play the game. They taught us so well, that we beat them. After the games the Brownies all burst in to song and entertained us with a medley of tunes from ‘The good old days’ so they said! A great time was had by all.

Harper fields makes resident's wishes come true

Coming up to Memory lane resident Meg’s 90th Birthday, we asked her daily what she would like, what she has always wanted to do that was special to her. Every day she replied with “I would love to ride in a fast car, a sports type car. Not on a race track though, I want to speed past cars on the road.” So with that in mind, we called Aston Martin in Solihull Birmingham and told them about Meg’s dream. Dean (manager) at Aston Martin, jumped at the chance of helping to make Megs birthday wish come true. Dean turned up at Harper fields and escorted Meg on the drive of her life. Meg wept tears of joy as she sat in the luxury silver Aston Martin car.  What a day for her and everyone at Harper fields.
