Activities at Elgar Court Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Kerrie Perks

Activities Leader

Hello, My name is Kerrie and I provide the unique life enrichment for residents at Elgar Court.  I moved to Malvern 12 years ago to live with my fiance and we have two tortoises and a snake.  I love to play Dungeons and Dragons with my friends.  I am very 'outdoorsy' and used to ride horses and compete nationally in athletics, specialising in track and field for Redditch and Bromsgrove athletics club.  In my spare time, I love being in the kitchen and making treats for my family.

A day in the life of……Maria – Activities Leader

Welcome to the day in the life of our Activities leader Maria. Catch her if you can, as Maria is always busy creating, running arts and crafts classes, driving Mini bus Mable on outings with residents and generally being a super duper, indispensable member of our team. From show stopping, award winning celebration cakes, (remember our Christmas bauble cakes we donated to the food banks to our latest awesome homage to Karl Faberge’s Lillies of the Valley egg), to wheeling round the pre-dinner drinks trolley to relaxing and soothing aromatherapy hand massages – which resident adore, Maria is another valued member of Elgar Court!

Say hello to Noodle, our new furry mascot

We have been very blessed with Pets As Therapy, the charity visiting our home since we opened, and we are pleased to announce that we now have a permanent mascot, Noodle.

Noodle doesn’t live at our home permanently, but he is another daily friendly face that residents can enjoy and cuddle and take for walks!

Wowing with Watercolours!

Our Activities room has become a really focus for our residents in recent months, with everyone wanting to explore the range of activities we have to offer.  Alice (103 years) produced the most wonderful watercolour floral abstracts, and we just watched in awe at the beautiful work she produced – we are hoping to run an art competition with the Malvern community in the next few months, so watch this space!

Meet Cherry Hill, MBE.

Meet Cherry Hill, MBE, our first resident to move into Elgar Court.  Born in Malvern, Cherry was a Model Engineer trailblazer in her time.  Known for her detailed scale models of steam vehicles, Cherry is considered to be one of the greatest model engineers of all time, and has built nearly 20 detailed scale models of steam vehicles, including Victorian models - which each took her approximately 7,000 hours to make, and are fully operational. There have even been numerous books and magazine articles written about Cherry and awards!

We are honoured Cherry has chosen to live with us, and enjoy daily life in our home.  From enjoying daily exercise, music concerts and trips out to name a few, Cherry has fully embraced the easier way of life at Elgar Court – including our lovely home baked chocolate cakes!

A Waitrose Walkabout

Life is what you make it, and it doesn’t stop when you move to our residential home – it gets better!

This week, residents popped into our local Waitrose for a coffee and a browse around to stock up on little extras. Joan was a frequent shopper at the Malvern branch and all staff knew Joan and stopped to talk to her.  Life’s little pleasures are connecting with people and making their day – and Joan certainly made their day as they had all missed her!

No trouble here Officers!

We had the pleasure this week of entertaining our Malvern policing team Becky, Dave and Kevin.

Residents enjoyed hearing how Malvern is a lovely safe place with them in charge, and seeing demonstrations of their policing toolkit – handcuffs, body cameras, smart water tagging sprays, tasers and batons!  And of course, reassured that these are not needed with the good folk of Malvern!

However, Maria our Activities Co-ordinator felt what it’s like being on the wrong side of the law when she tried on the hancuffs!  Luckily PC Dave had his keys and safely handed our beloved Maria back to us!

Thank you for coming to see us, and please do call by again and use our “Take a Break” service that is open to all our Emergency services workers.  We offer complimentary refreshments to eat in or take away to all local Police, Nurses, Doctors, Fire teams and Ambulance crews – We look forward to welcoming you soon!
