Activities at The Cedars Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience, and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Angela Cawsey

Activities Coordinator

My name is Angela Cawsey and I am 60 years young.  I have lived locally to Cedars since 2011, firstly in Downton and more recently in Alderbury.  In the past I have worked with mature people in their homes, and adults with learning difficulties in a number of settings.   During lockdown I ran daily zoom sessions for wellbeing, including bingo and quizzes.

I enjoy spending time with people and helping them smile, whether on a one-to-one basis or in groups.  When my children were young I volunteered as a helper at Boys Brigade and St John’s Ambulance which was very rewarding.

Other jobs I have enjoyed include, selling computers, an IT and Management Trainer, HR and Business Manager and my personal favourite, being Grandma to 8 grandchildren.  I love music, craft, the outdoors and animals.

Our stunning wheat sheaf loaf!

It’s a tradition of harvest time to make salt dough bread decorations in designs to celebrate the crops coming in from the fields, residents helped our chef to prepare a stunning wheat sheaf loaf. Made in the shape of a tied bunch of grain stalks after they have been harvested it was a common sight at this time of year during the centuries when harvests were done by hand with scythes.

Residents talked about their memories of making bread, the delicious smell and taste of a warm loaf fresh from the oven, in some cases a staple of their daily diet. Recalling the celebrations of harvest in years gone by they recalled their school days when only seasonal food was available, very different to the wide range of fresh foods flown in from all over the world today.

Ice cream cones with rainbow sprinkles!

It maybe October but we all still enjoy an ice cream cone, the activity team visited all our residents in the home with a delicious choice of flavours, everyone chose their favourite and toppings added to make them extra special

Baking fruit scones for tea!

There was plenty of action with an afternoon of baking this week, weighing, mixing and plenty of stirring too. The fruit scones went to the kitchen for baking and returned looking delicious, so good they all disappeared before we could take a photo!

Delightful morning of flower arranging

Residents enjoyed a morning of flower arranging with some beautiful fresh blooms, they made table decorations for the dining room and arranged others for display in vases around the home.

Thank you to everyone taking part, you brightening up our day

Our Macmillan coffee morning

Residents and staff enjoyed their annual Macmillan coffee morning today – it’s a slightly smaller event without our relatives this year however so important to support Macmillan who has said its flagship coffee morning is facing a £20 million drop in income this year. A fall of this size could risk more than 80,000 cancer patients missing out on support from a Macmillan nurse next year.

We started the morning with a quiz, including questions about baking and what we love about chatting over a drink, staff popped by for the coffee and cake making donations too and buying raffle tickets for the Macmillan aprons which would make great gifts.

Our Memory Lane residents helped with the coloured cupcakes which decorated the lounge so it really was an event for everyone in the home, BIG thank you for all the cakes, raffle prizes and donations.
