Activities at Boroughbridge Manor Care Home

As the men’s team reached the final of the Euros tournament we set up our own evening of football fun! We played some ball games up on memory lane to warm up before all settling down to watch the match together, with a drink from our in house bar! Residents enjoyed cheering on the team, unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be but there’s always next time! It was wonderful for our football fans to be able to watch the match together and even those who haven’t ever enjoyed football, had a really fun evening!

With the heatwave upon us we jumped on our mini bus and headed to G&T's Ice Cream parlour to enjoy a sweet treat each on such a lovely summers day! With an array of flavours to choose from, residents enjoyed some really delicious ice creams, a favourite being the Risplith Ripple! Some of us even had to have 2, we just couldn’t resist! It’s really important to use here that residents are still able to do those things they always used to enjoy before moving into care, so we always try our very best to make this possible! What a lovely trip out we had together.

What an energetic morning we had during the week of Wimbledon as we played an in house tennis tournament, with our very own homemade centre court! Residents worked together in small teams, playing against each other in short but highly competitive games, before the staff took to the court! The domestic team had only one tactic - they were full of overhead smashes, whilst the maintenance team did nothing but volley the ball all over the court, in order to get everyone out and take the winning trophy! Spectators and players were then treated to a refreshing glass of Pimms and well deserved bowl of tasty strawberries and cream, love-ly. We all had so much fun!

On a day when the sun was shining we hopped on our minibus and headed to our local PYO strawberry field! One of our carers Mary and her partner run Fruity Berry Fruit Farm PYO YO7 3DB, a local fruit farm close to Boroughbridge. The farm has accessible strawberry beds, meaning those who physically cannot get down to the ground to pick fruit are still able to take part in the activity, perfect for our residents! We had a lovely morning together and as resident Beryl said ‘it brought back lovely memories of doing this many years ago! ‘When we got back to the home, chef Karen whipped us up some Eton mess that we could all enjoy that afternoon! DELICIOUS!

Earlier this month we were thrilled to welcome the wonderful team from Ripon Theatre Festival, who brought along a show from their travelling festival for us all to enjoy in the comfort of our home. Amazing! The team at Goofus Theatre performed ‘Carried by the wind’ which is a pop-up, playful, non-verbal journey with puppetry, mask and music. It’s a really magical story of a feather, blowing in the wind. After the performance the talented team kindly spoke with residents all about the show and allowed us to meet and interact with the fascinating puppets. We really can’t thank the team from Ripon theatre festival enough for bringing the show to us and enabling us to enjoy this experience today! We have all had a fantastic afternoon!

A couple have celebrated 63 years of marriage. Cyril and Eileen married at St. Mary’s Church, Cottonstones on 8th July 1961 and have enjoyed a wonderful life together ever since.

Attending the wedding 63 years ago were both Cyril and Eileen’s parents and all of their siblings. Cyril can recall the morning of the wedding, where he stood waiting for Eileen at the church for a little longer than he had expected. Eileen’s father had an old Rolls Royce that he wished to take Eileen to church in, however on the way to the ceremony the car overheated and broke down, leaving those at the church wondering where Eileen was until a message eventually got over to them! They went on to enjoy a wonderful honeymoon together in the Isle of Man and later had 3 children together
