Activities at Tixover House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Nicola Blevins-Twose

Activities Coordinator

Hello, my name is Nicola (Nic) and I'm the Activities Coordinator here at Tixover House.

My role is to enrich the lives of our residents by providing stimulating and person-centred activities, entertainers and outings. At Tixover House we offer something for everyone, including crafts, games, virtual visits to places of interest around the world, outings in the local area and parties.  We also provide one-to-one time and sensory activities with residents who need more support. Getting to know our residents better is so important, and through regular family and friends meeting we can gain a greater understanding of their loved ones' interests and life prior to joining Tixover House.

I look forward to getting to know you, and your loved ones. 'Living life to the full' is my motto, and whatever your ability there is always something new to learn or try.

We are always open to new ideas. If you would like to get involved in any of our Life Enrichment activities or have a skill, or project you'd like to share with our residents, please click here to contact me direct. New entertainers and community links are always welcome.

A right Royal Tea Party

For the first time in seven decades, Tixover House in Rutland marked the King’s birthday on November 14th with a right Royal Tea Party attended by a very special guest.

As His Majesty’s representative within the county, it was an absolute pleasure for the home to welcome the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness to join us and witness her plant a tree on our residents’ behalf in recognition of King Charles III birthday.

The chosen tree is a ‘Royal Medlar Apple’ whose fruits, once fermented are rich in potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and iron. The home has registered its planting as part of The Queen's Green Canopy with the location open to visitors.

Patisserie Chef Claudia Sleight and the homes’ hospitality team whipped up a tasty selection of freshly-made finger sandwiches, walnut and cherry scones, pastries and cakes for the occasion, all washed down with pots of tea.

Remembrance Wreath Presentation

Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness to the home to collect a handmade remembrance wreath lovingly created by our residents.

The wreath will be presented by Dr Furness at the service of Remembrance on 11th November in the grounds of Oakham Castle which will mark the day when the guns fell silent, and the armistice was declared.

Dr Sarah Furness meet with resident representatives; Heather and Renira who were honoured to present the homes’ commemorative wreath. Working together with the homes Activities Lead, Nicola Blevins-Twose our residents designed, and created their wreath with felt poppies to show respect for the diversity of those who died in the First World War and the conflicts that followed.

Our circle of ‘Remembrance and Hope’ represents the most famous Red poppy inspired by the fields of poppies that grew where many of the battles were fought.

The Black Poppy commemorating the contributions of black, African and Caribbean communities to the war effort of service people and civilians. The Purple poppy remembers animals that have been victims of war. Animals like horses, dogs and pigeons were often drafted into the war effort and the White poppy that focuses on achieving peace and challenges the way we look at war.

Home manager, Ive Alexander said: “We have many residents and staff with personal ties to the military and many who have experienced conflict either at home or abroad, it is important to us to mark November 11th and remember the contribution of everyone involved in the World Wars and in subsequent conflicts.

It was wonderful to have His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness visit the home today to collect our homemade remembrance wreath, having it form part of the many commemorative tributes on display at the forthcoming Rutland community remembrance events is a great honour.

To all those who have fallen, it’s with grateful thanks for your sacrifices ‘We’ the residents and staff of Tixover House Care Home will never forget those who have lost their lives to save others.

Bonfire Night

Remember, remember the 5th of November!

Our residents enjoyed an evening full of colour and storytelling. They loved bending the neon bars to create their own bangles and necklaces and seeing them glow in the dark, creating firework art using chalks and watching a firework display to music on the lounge and cinema TV.

We chatted about the Gunpowder plot as we made a ‘Penny for the Guy’ before settling down to a traditional bonfire supper of warming spiced squash soup, hotdogs and parkin accompanied by mulled cider or hot chocolate with marshmallows.
