Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

G’day! My name is Natasha and I am the activities lead here at Strachan House. I am Australian born and bred, braving the dark and the cold here in Edinburgh to enjoy the beautiful nature and wonderful people! I have a background in team management and design. Life at Strachan House Care Home

National Doughnut Week

We celebrated National Doughnut Week here at Strachan House . And what a delicious celebration it was. Residents enjoyed learning the history of this sweet treat and certainly enjoyed the tasting session.

Did you know?

In 1917, the original doughnut was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe. Home-cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.” A more standard spelling of the word in the USA is “donut.” But we know them as doughnuts here.

Cinco de Mayo

To celebrate Cinco Des Mayo we took the opportunity to hang some bunting, shake our maracas, dress up and enjoy some traditional Mexican music, along with delicious dishes, prepared by our talented chef.

During the day, the Piñata was great fun and we all learnt something new about the meaning of the Mexican festival.

Great fun had by everyone!

Conversations on The Pond with Henry Slator

We had a lovely time joining Henry Slator for an exciting virtual event to discuss his book ‘Conversations at the Pond’.

Henry had an unusual writing journey, which many of our residents found inspiring, he underwent chemotherapy in early 2020, which allowed him to rediscover his light-hearted outlook on life by imagining conversations with creatures in and around his large garden pond and adding buckets of fun.

The entertaining Conversations at the Pond, with its mass of colourful illustrations, took our residents along his journey, they felt inspired, cheered and loved hearing all about Henry’s experiences.

A great time was had by all.

A fun filled morning with a live performance

We had a fun filled afternoon with our regular visitor from Jack High.

Residents enjoyed an afternoon of singing and dancing and reminisced over some good old favourites!

A brilliant afternoon had by everyone here at Strachan House.

National Tea Day

What a lovely way to spend the afternoon celebrating National Tea Day . We chatted and reminisced over some tea tasting and chatted about our memories of tea being rationed during wartimes...and of course the scones and cream went down a trea

Easter celebrations at Strachan House

To celebrate Easter in style, the home was decorated with Easter eggs, bunnies and colourful banners to bring positivism and holiday spirit.

Throughout the day, everyone got involved in a variety of fun-filled activities, from enjoying hot cross buns and making Easter wreath to quizzes, poetry and puzzles.

The residents had the opportunity to learn more about the Easter traditions and reminiscence about how they used to celebrate the day.

What a lovely Easter full of colour, laughter and chocolate!
