Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

G’day! My name is Natasha and I am the activities lead here at Strachan House. I am Australian born and bred, braving the dark and the cold here in Edinburgh to enjoy the beautiful nature and wonderful people! I have a background in team management and design. I have always loved working with people and have a strong interest in mental health and well-being, recently embarking on a psychology degree with an interest in specialising in Art Therapy. I am working with the team to create a vibrant, engaging and person-centred home.

Gone Fishing Project

Our Gone Fishing 23 project struck again this week. Our wonderful resident Bill wished he could have his own garden again, so we teamed up with Struan Dow who needed to create a project. Heads were put together and Struan earned his JASS award by building Bill a beautiful herb garden naming it “ Bills Patch”. Bill was then surprised by Struan when he presented his workmanship to him as a gift. Well done Struan and Bill who are now firm friends within the local community. They are looking forward to several planting sessions together.

Easter Celebrations

Residents set off their Easter celebrations with a cruise down the canal with The Seagull Trust in Ratho today. What an amazing day they had taking in the spring air as well  as the amazing scenery. We did some bird watching, a Easter quiz and of course had a good old sing song as we trundled up the water way. All our residents had a great time and all that fresh air has certainly left them egg-hausted.

Strachan House awaits the arrival of it's newest family members

As Easter fast approaches we wanted to do something a little different this year that all our residents could get involved in. So yesterday we welcomed 5 little duck eggs into our family. They will be hatching into the world under the watchful eye of our very excited residents. During their time of hatching, residents have been learning about the life cycle of our yellow fluffy friends and how to care for them once they arrive. Check out our Facebook Page for regular updates and be prepared for some overload cuteness as we welcome our Easter babies into the world.

Gone Fishing 23 - Swan Lake

Sandy a resident here at Strachan House always talked about her days as a ballet dancer and striding the stage with her moves. She said she never felt more alive than in a pair of ballet shoes and had the ability to express her emotions through movement and dance. So through our chats the team jumped into action and surprised Sandy with a trip to the theatre to watch Swan Lake with the Birmingham Royal Ballet. “ it was so overwhelming and took me back to my dancing days where I was at times my most happiest” Our Gone Fishing moments are all about creating memories just like this. Incredible.

Celebrating Vincent Van Gough's Birthday

Residents got creative today by celebrating Van Gogh’s birthday. What a day we had learning about one of the greatest artist of all times. After a morning of quizzes and fact finding and admiring some of his not so famous works, we decided to set up our replica of the famous “gratitude” and see how creative we could be. And as always we uncovered some hidden talents as the paint flowed on the canvasses and some amazing art pieces were created.

Preparing for Easter

Strachan House have started their preparations for some nonstop fun as Easter approaches. After a kind donation of fluffy materials what better way than to make us some bunnies to hop around the home for Easter. Residents are getting creative as they design the perfect bunny to showcase at our open Easter events.
