Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Natasha Rubin

Activities Coordinator

G’day! My name is Natasha and I am the activities lead here at Strachan House. I am Australian born and bred, braving the dark and the cold here in Edinburgh to enjoy the beautiful nature and wonderful people! I have a background in team management and design. I have always loved working with people and have a strong interest in mental health and well-being, recently embarking on a psychology degree with an interest in specialising in Art Therapy. I am working with the team to create a vibrant, engaging and person-centred home.

Life at Strachan House Care Home

Virtual singing session

Our home had a fantastic time with vocal coach Mark De-Lisser as he led an amazing virtual singing session for our residents to enjoy.

Our residents were able to learn different techniques as they sang the famous ‘I’m a Believer’ by The Monkees.

There were smiles and laugher all around. The session was such a success and was great for the mind, body and soul.

Visit from a furry friend!

We were delighted for the return of the wonderful Jocelyn who brought Finn our new #therapet visitor.

Finn was loved by all who met him, and Jocelyn was lucky to get back out without us managing to keep him for good.

Did you know that for some years now it has been recognised, more and more, that pets are good for us! Indeed, it has been scientifically proven that the mere action of stroking a dog, or cat, slows down the heartbeat, reduces blood pressure, and makes someone who has already suffered a heart attack much less likely to have another.

Cruising up the canal

Some of our residents enjoyed a day's cruising up the canal from Ratho. It was perfect weather and perfect company.

Big thankyou to The Seagull Trust for all their kindness and for making it such a special day.

Royal Ascot at Strachan House

What a day at Strachan House. In conjunction with Royal Ascot week we ran our own race with each unit entering their own race horse into the derby.

It was pandemonium all round. Our horses Tap Dance Tango, Giddyup Galileo and Magic Marvin raced around a course collecting their lost shoes whilst being cheered on by their owners.

Congratulations goes to Memory Lane and their horse Magic Marvin crossing the finish post first.

Everyone received trophies and medals and of course it wouldn't be a race without a winners enclosure. Residents enjoyed their triumph with delicious food prepared by our chef and a selection of wines to celebrate a great day at the races.

Big thanks goes to all the team at Strachan House for making it an amazing day for our residents

Namaste Trolley at Strachan House

Namaste changes the focus of dementia as a condition and focuses more on the person in that session we deliver. It is also creates a beautiful environment in the end of life process creating peace and serenity.

Every session is tailored to the individual needs making it a personal experience for the individual engaging in the session.

Using a wide variety of smells, visual and sound aids we can encourage communication and physical movement through stimulation in a calm environment. Overall creating a lovely experience for the person.

We are very excited about putting Namaste into action with our residents and seeing the results that can be achieved. Why not when you visit ask our Head of Activities Mandy to join in a session with your loved one.

Carers Week at Strachan House

This week we have been celebrating #nationalcarersweek. And here at Strachan House we are never short of fabulous carers to celebrate with.

Our wonderful staff enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea prepared by our Chef, and were spoilt with chocolate to say thank you.

This week we wanted to let everyone know how much we appreciate them and the support they give to our residents. Thank you for all you do.
