Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

World Animal Day

What a wild day.. exactly how it should be. To celebrate World Animal Day we invited our Cool Creatures back to Strachan House due to how popular they are with our residents.

What better way to learn than with a handling session whilst learning about some of the animals we share our world with.

With Pongo the skunk, Brave the Meerkat, Acorn the Tenric, Hefty the Burmese Python and Sid the bearded dragon being a big hit with our residents we all had a fun filled afternoon sharing a wee cuddle and selfies with the gang.

In Memory of Her Majesty The Queen

To celebrate our Majesty, Olive Duncan a resident at Strachan House wore her medals for the day in honor of our Queen.

Olive said: “I can still remember the Coronation, how young the Queen looked.  She dedicated her entire life to serving us all and worked right up until the very end. She did us proud – we couldn’t have asked for a better Queen.  I feel as though I have known her my whole life, she will be very much missed.”

In Honour of Her Majesty the Queen

Our residents said goodbye to our Queen in their own special way. Throughout the 10 days of mourning our residents have reminisced, shared memories and created floral displays and a book of condolences ready for yesterdays final farewell.

To pay our respects we turned our lounge into a peaceful and reflective space where residents, relatives and staff could be together and immerse themselves in the coverage of the state funeral.

Afterwards we had the option of lunch in the dining room or a wonderful wake buffet in our lounge to which everyone enjoyed.

What a solemn day it was. But the sense of togetherness at Strachan House was beautiful and a moment that will be remembered for a long time to come.

Soap Making Friday

We were delighted to welcome Handmade by Kayleigh to Strachan House. Kayleigh demonstrated how to make a lush block bar of handmade lavender soap using oils and fresh cut lavender.

Our residents then tried their hands at making their own choices of soap. From sweet orange extract to infused lemon grass our home was filled with fragrances. Finally our residents were delighted to have their own creations packaged and gifted to them to enjoy at their leisure.

Big thankyou to Handmade By Kayleigh and we hope to see her again soon

Military Museum Visit

Residents enjoyed a visit to the military museum in Wilkeston where they walked around learning about the interesting history.

What a fantastic way to spend the afternoon!

Music Through The Ages Tour with Sarah Deters

We had a brilliant time with curator Sarah Deters as she took us on a virtual ‘Music Through the Ages’ tour of St Cecilia’s Hall: Concert Room and Music Museum.

Our residents were thrilled to discover weird and wonderful musical instruments, hear their unusual sounds, and find out how instruments have changed over the last 500 years.

The virtual live event explored the world-renown collection of musical instruments on display at St Cecilia’s Hall, Scotland’s oldest concert hall.

A lovely time was had by all.
