Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angela Blackburn

Head of Activities

My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.

We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.

We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Life at Spen Court Care Home

An afternoon of song and dance

The residents of Spen Court enjoyed an afternoon of music. As the lyrics were displayed on the large screen to a number of bygone songs, residents got involved by dancing, singing and clapping along.

One Resident commented: “What a lovely sound, I’ve really enjoyed listening to some of my favourite songs.”

Cheryl Norman, General Manager said: “Everyone really loved the music. The room was filled with smiles and laughter as Residents joined in with the performance.”

Virtual trip to the Donkey Sanctuary

Across our services, Residents enjoyed a fantastic virtual tour of the Donkey Sanctuary Manchester.   Residents were thrilled to meet the lovely herd of donkeys, including Henry and his best friend Tiny Tim and to learn more about their every day care.   They were introduced to the sanctuary’s work and the impact they make to the lives of donkeys in need worldwide.  The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all.

Lest we forget

After our two minutes of Silence, We had a fantastic time painting poppies to display around our home. Today we wear our Poppies with Pride!

Pumpkin o'clock

It was 'Pumpkin o'clock' at Spen Court when we welcomed our friends from the Cooperative Nursery in Dewsbury for a little Halloween fun.

The lively group of 3 and 4 year old's made us smile, laugh, helped create a little mess with our pumpkin carving designs!

We loved every single second of it of this fun-filled morning and we are looking forward to them visiting again in December as part of our festive celebrations.

Residents take to the water!

Residents of Spen Court took to the water to enjoy a trip to Shepley Marina for an outing on one of its barges to take in the scenery of the Calder canal.   Resident, Edith who is 100-years young thoroughly enjoyed the trip and was delighted to pose!  The weather was beautiful and everyone enjoyed an amazing autumnal day out.

World Mental Health Day

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Spen Court care home in Heckmondwike have been marking World Mental Health Day by taking part in a range of different activities to promote good mental health.  World Mental Health Day took place on Monday 10 October, the idea behind the day is to encourage people around the word to talk about mental health in general and how we all need to look after our mental health by talking about things and sharing our challenges.  The theme this year is ‘Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’.  The World Federation for Mental Health has been working for over 70 years to make sure mental health is treated on a par with physical health.  World Mental Health Day is also an opportunity to ask for help if you are struggling.
