Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angela Blackburn

Head of Activities

My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.

We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.

We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Life at Spen Court Care Home

Live Entertainment

Dominic the Ukulele player came to perform for us here at Spen Court. Sandra wanted to get involved and became less of a groupie and part of a duo. Sandra and Dominic sang a duo together. The performance was amazing and Sandra enjoyed every second of it, before going back to dancing and being a dedicated groupie.

Promoting Independence

Moira, a resident who lives in our Memory Lane community, likes to keep herself busy and enjoys being helpful to others.

Moira showed an interest in doing something in the kitchen on Memory Lane. So when she requested a cup of tea and some toast, we got her to work. Moira made a cup of tea with toast & marmalade, with the assistance of the activities team.

Independence is important to the physical and mental wellbeing of older adults who are living with dementia. Something so simple can have a large impact on the person. It gives them a sense of purpose, aids with memory skills and is beneficial to muscle balance and strength.

We like to encourage the residents to maintain independence, as a team member assists.

Officially opening our new Salon after our WOW

Exciting times to the start of 2023, Spen Court had the official opening of the new hair salon.

The first client to be pampered in the fancy salon was Edith. Edith is a resident on Pennine and is a sprightly Century old. Edith was so happy to be the first residents to get to use the new salon.

Christine is our in house stylist and does everything from washing to perming and hair colouring.

Christine has continued to dedicate her time to doing the hair of the residents by using the individuals rooms as their salon.

Residents enjoy panto performance

Residents at Spen Court a brilliant surprise when popular home entertainers, NorthEast Producers popped by for a very special performance of Annie. It was a fabulous afternoon with much laughter, comedy, songs and even some heckling!  Live entertainment is a firm feature in the homes life enrichment programme.

Gingerbread House Day

We love any excuse to get creative so when we found out it was Gingerbread House Day on December 12, we didn’t need any persuading to get cracking.

Our talented chef prepared a big batch of gingerbread for our residents, who then got busy decorating with icing, buttercream and edible glitter to make some of the glitziest gingerbread houses in town.

The gingerbread houses look really lovely and they are indeed delicious - what a fun way to spend the afternoon. And, we didn’t eat it!

Home celebrate Elf Day

Staff at Spen Court Care Home in Heckmondwike swapped their uniforms for costumes on National Elf Day (Friday December 2nd) in an effort to raise funds to help people living with dementia.

Launched by the Alzheimer’s Society and delivered direct from the North Pole, Elf Day was created to sprinkle some festive cheer on fundraising towards finding a cure for dementia. From stripy socks to head-to-toe elf outfits, anything goes – there’s snow better way to raise money to help beat dementia.

On the day, residents and staff at Spen Court were able to enjoy elf-themed games including best-dressed elf competition, Christmas tree decorating, bauble decorating and Christmas raffle as the team at the home donned their elfish apparel. The home managed to raise a total of £26 towards the cause.
