What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"Everything seems to be satisfactory and the only problem we can see is the home could do with a good full-time cook."

"The staff at Spen Court are excellent! Coming to visit my grandma here feels like I am visiting her actual home. The care is totally personal to each individual that I have witnessed. Staff know family members by name and welcome and include families with activities and go above and beyond to cater for individual needs."

"My mum came to Barchester Spen Court Care Home for respite following a fall at home. From the minute my mum went into Spen Court, we were treated with respect and compassion. My mum is still in Spen Court but still hoping to return to her own home. The staff there are amazing, they work together very professionally but also as one, making visiting and the stay for Mum a welcoming experience. Well done to everyone who works at the home, I wouldn't change the staff and care at all. Fantastic teamwork."

"All staff members are hardworking and deserve a massive pay rise for what they have to put up with. The costs for the home/care are so very high that you charge but you pay the staff as little as possible. Reward your staff better, you wouldn't do the job yourself."

"Friendly staff who are very caring - the staff are very welcoming! I enjoy visiting my mum and having a chat with the residents and staff. My mum has only just joined the home but it already feels like home when we visit her. A huge thank you to all the staff are Barchester Spen Court Care Home!"

"Staff are very friendly and have made the transition for not only my grandma but us, as a family, simple and easy. They have welcomed us all! Could not ask for better members of staff to care for my grandma, they cannot do enough. They deserve a pay rise. They care for all residents like family members rather than just part of their job. I enjoy coming to the care home. Cannot thank them enough! The staff are an asset to Barchester and make this care home."

"My mum went into Barchester Spen Court Care Home for one week of respite care. We chose it because of the location and having a visit, it seemed like the perfect fit however during her stay, though she was well fed and generally cared for, she hadn't been showered other than by my sister-in-law and was in the same clothes for five days which she appeared to have slept in. Once here, I discovered she had no underwear on. Whilst I appreciate she can't be made to do things, I do believe some encouragement is needed."

"I am very impressed with Spen Court. The staff are all lovely. Everything is dealt with very professionally. Mum is taking a while to settle in, but the staff are so patient with her. Mum is also being encouraged to use her walking frame, which is great for her. The rooms are lovely, with plenty of room and storage and a fantastic ensuite tool. All in all, I am happy that Mum is in very safe hands."

"What a lovely care home with the best care staff who really care. My aunt settled in from the word go and will definitely be back in the coming weeks for sure. The new manager couldn’t have been more accommodating and supportive, you can see the dedication and this makes all the difference. Lots of good food on offer, the chef makes wonderful cakes - there is always one when we stop in the cafe area which is a lovely touch. High-quality care, all staff are warm and welcoming and the home is lovely and clean. Couldn’t ask for more."

"All the staff that work in the care home are kind, caring and always have a smile for you and cannot do enough to help if it's needed. Cannot praise them enough. Don't know management - she doesn't do activities. No idea about the costs."

"The first thing I must say is, what a fantastic receptionist you have at Spen Court. She's warm, welcoming and very helpful in every way. She always goes the extra mile for you. She's always watching what's going on whilst doing her own work. My dad is blind and I find that sometimes the carers forget this e.g the hot weather they have had, they had jugs of juice and cups but my dad cannot see where they are and on many occasions, Dad has not got a drink. When we get him one he drinks it in one go because he's thirsty. Please look into it. Not good enough."

"My step-mum has been resident for six months and has always been well cared for by carers and staff who are warm, caring and respectful. Nothing is too much trouble with regards to my step-mums’ requirements. She is encouraged to interact with other residents and take part in daily activities. She has been happy and content since moving into Spen Court and has chosen to stay long term and not return to her home with a care package. I am confident in the care provided and always made to feel very welcome when I visit."

"When my wife and I first had a look around Spen Court. We were absolutely blown away by what we saw. Mum is happy there and the staff can't do enough for each resident. Spen court is clean, tidy and always well presented. Would highly recommend Spen court to anyone."

"My father moved into Spen Court earlier this year after he was finding it increasingly harder to look after himself at home. As a family, we were made to feel immediately welcome by the staff. My sister and I both live some distance from Spen Court so therefore telephone frequently to get news about Dad. Our telephone calls are always dealt with, with friendliness and efficiency. Nothing is ever too much trouble. We are happy with Dad's personal care. He has been able to personalise his room with pictures and ornaments which have helped him feel settled. The accommodation is of a high standard. The daily menus are varied but unfortunately, the food is not always to his taste. Some meals he has difficulty eating as he best manages a soft diet."

"My dad originally came to Spen Court for respite and was converted to a permanent resident. The home was lovely as were the people. They always listened to any problems and acted where necessary. Dad was much happier when he moved rooms. He enjoyed lovely food and was persuaded to join activities whilst he was a resident. Sadly he unexpectedly passed in the home shortly after and I couldn't praise the staff more for how it was handled. They were so caring about organising things and dealing with family that night."

"My husband went into Spen Court from hospital one year ago. It was a challenging time because of Covid, I was not able to visit for a few weeks. The staff were excellent, keeping me informed as to how he was settling. When I was able to visit, I was amazed to see how calm, settled and content he was. I asked him if he was happy, he gave me a big smile and said yes. Spen Court is a lovely home, always a friendly welcome from all staff. Nothing is too much trouble. Thank you all for the excellent care."

"Mum was admitted to Spen Court in January 2021 after hospital admission for Covid. Totally brilliant care at a difficult time. Mum soon gained the two stone she had lost due to the nutritious food. Initially, very difficult as Mum just wanted to go home! The manager and staff were very supportive, going to great lengths to arrange an overnight stay, and when that wasn't successful, we organised an assisted living apartment. Mum decided a few days before moving in that she needed the care and security that she received at Spen Court. The relief for the family was enormous, and Mum has settled brilliantly, making lots of friends and enjoying our time together. The support and help we have received with recent hospital appointments and stoma products have been so professional and reassuring for both Mum and myself."

"The home is a very friendly and kind environment. All the staff know my dad very well and treat him with the greatest care and respect. They will always tell me of any problems and will listen and act on any concerns I may have. They always have time to listen to me and are there for me as much as for Dad. It is like a large family, and my dad is happy and well cared for."

"I recently made my first visit to see dad in Spen Court as I live out of the area and my sisters had settled him in. I was so pleased to see how content and happy he was. I spent several hours in his room and in that time the attentive staff checked on him several times and everyone I met was so friendly. I left feeling relieved and happy that my dad is in such a lovely home."

"Our father has Alzheimer's and after our Mum died 2 years ago it was becoming increasingly difficult to give Dad the care and attention he needed living alone. After various falls and stays in hospital, my siblings and I made the difficult decision to look around at care homes. My sister and I looked around ones close by and the one that stood out with warmth, care and love was Spen Court. The brilliant staff were so helpful with the smooth transfer from hospital into his own very well-appointed and cheery room. Dad seems to have settled in really well, enjoys his amazing meals (I'm moving in looking at the menus!), and the care he is given is second to none. He always looks clean, well-fed and cared for. The staff are so patient, we couldn't have wished for any better care. Such a relief! But most important to us is that our lovely Dad is smiling so much more - the angst has disappeared from his face. Thank you Spen Court!"

"Our dad has only been in Spen Court for three weeks but the fantastic staff have managed to put a smile on his face. The staff are always professional but always have time for a chat and put our minds at rest if we have any concerns. The management and staff have made our dad's transition into the care home as smooth as could be. We would definitely recommend Spen Court if you want your loved ones to feel like they belong to one big happy family."

"Excellent care home. The staff are so friendly and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble. They are great with residents and family. It's the best place and couldn't have found anywhere as nice as this. My mother-in-law is so happy and she's really settled it's a delight to see her so happy. The staff are so friendly and helpful and couldn't have asked for better staff. Thank you for looking after my mother-in-law."

"Although this is a challenging time for new care home admissions, all the staff we have had contact with have been so helpful and reassuring, and any concerns dealt with immediately. Mum speaks fondly of the carers who chat with her about her grandchildren, which she loves. Mum loves the meals and snacks which she receives and is gaining weight steadily that she lost prior to admission. Mum has only been at Spen Court since January 2021 after a three-week hospital stay with Covid. She still asks to come home, but the staff are reassuring in settling her. Visiting in the pod and now room visits are first class. A massive thank you to all the staff for the extra work that is involved in facilitating the much-needed visit."

"I would always describe Spen Court as my mum's home, not a home! It's the most welcoming, loving place. The staff love my mum and she loves them. I have been in a few homes and although clean, comfortable and warm, none came anywhere near the homely feel of Spen Court. The staff not only care for my mum, they also give care and special time to us, always thoughtful and kind. To my late dad, this made a very difficult time much easier. The problems we all face now, making visiting our loved ones almost impossible for most people, are very hard but Mum being at Spen Court is a real weight lifted. We know she is loved, happy and so well looked after. We are so lucky and grateful. Please can I say a big thank you to all at Spen Court!"

"My auntie is an 83-year-old widow who lived alone for almost 30 years before moving into Spen Court. She is fiercely independent but dementia and deafness hampered her ability to look after herself. She rejected all attempts to help her stay at home so when Spen Court offered a room we accepted. It took her a while to settle in but thanks to the staff who were understanding, patient and kind she soon looked and clearly felt much better. She is not an easy person to deal with and can be difficult and abrupt at times but the staff have accepted her, she is allowed breathing space and they really go to know her. They treat her with sensitivity, respect and in a friendly manner. None of this is done in a formal way it is good-natured everyday care like being a part of a big family. My auntie likes her room at Spen Court and is safe, healthy and contented. She can be quiet or have company when she wants it. The staff take care of everything so she has no worried and nor do I. I know she is in safe hands."

"My mum has now been a resident for nearly 4 years, during this time her care has been brilliant. She is happy, calm and accepting of her situation. I made the decision to move her from Birmingham to be near me and from the first evening that we arrived with her staff have been incredible. I would just like to thank everyone for making my decision that little bit easier and for making me feel that it was the right one."

"My mother has recently returned to Spen Court after a few weeks in the hospital. The hospital care was not ideal but since returning back to Spen Court her care has markedly improved. She is receiving specialist care for her own special needs and is much more comfortable. All staff members know her and she knows them which helps her to feel more comfortable. Over the two years that my mother has spent at Spen Court, she has been made welcome. The meals and daily coffee and snacks served to her room are excellent and she is kept tidy and clean."

"Mum only went into Spen Court in May 2020 when I could no longer meet mum's care needs. I have only seen her room twice, the day we both went to visit the home for the first time, the second when I took her in, since then I have seen her 4 times outside and so my contact with mum and the staff has been via telephone. When I have contacted anyone they have all been caring and understanding of mums needs. Mum herself is content and very happy with the care she receives and she enjoys the food."

"My mother-in-law has been at Spen Court for just over a year. It was a difficult decision for her to go into care. It has taken several months for her to settle but she does seem happy there now. The staff always call with updates such as a change of GP and any changes to her health and are always polite and friendly. The transition to Spen Court with Barchester seems to have gone smoothly."

"The staff, residents and ancillary workers are all very pleasant. You are always welcome. The home is always bright and cheerful. Meals are excellent and those people who need help with eating are helped without fuss. Those who need help with toilets are given help as necessary. There are always sufficient staff to deal with all situations and equipment is first rate. It lives up to its name "Brighter Kind". It is no effort to visit and I would be happy there when I am old."

"Mum has been a resident at Avery Mews for just over 6 months. As her family, we are very happy and reassured that she receives excellent, individualised care. I am always kept informed of any concerns or changes to her care plan. The home itself is spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. The food and menu are fabulous. Mum is certainly well fed! The tact and kindness shown by care staff, especially when encouraging personal hygiene and social presentation with residents is reassuring. Activities are arranged to suit the residents and entertainment is a regular feature. I know I can ring Avery Mews, or visit, at any time and be greeted by friendly, caring staff, who can always answer any questions I may have."

"The home has excellent facilities, the management and staff are mostly excellent however one or two staff members need improvement when dealing with residents. Simple things like dressing correctly and checking hearing aids. They just shove then in and do not check to see if batteries are in them or that they are switched on, this is a regular occurrence with my dad. Not just a one off and its the same staff members."

"My father has been a resident for almost 3 years until his death last week. He was a dementia sufferer and very vulnerable. Throughout his stay, the home provided a clean, odour free, pleasant environment. The accommodation was such as you would find in a good quality hotel or guest house. The food was food and plentiful. All these are the beginning . At Avery Mews the staff are its major asset. My dad was shown real love and affection which made his life there very pleasant. When dad was nearing the end of his life there very pleasant. When dad was nearing the end of his life my sons and I stayed with him continuously for 48 hours. The support we were given and the consideration we were shown were exemplary."

"Our father has recently been put into care as his Altzheimer's had got markedly worse. The manager made this move a lot less stressful. Staff were so considerate and kind. Unfortunately our fathers needs were more than they could provide as he developed psychotic behaviour and more challenging behaviour then they could cope with. The manager and staff were incredibly kind and supportive as we went through the very stressful process of finding a home that would take him. Couldn't speak higher of the staff, care, quality of rooms, dining everything every where."

"It was a difficult decision to put my mum in a care home. At 98 she was still physically able but was no longer able to cook for herself or shop and was often confused. She and I looked at 4 care homes and this was the only one she liked. From day 1 the staff have been very helpful, kind and respectful to mum. I live in Australia but was in England to put mum in the home. Staff were always welcoming and allowed her to have all the things in her room she needed including a glass of wine when she wanted one. Since I came home they helped her to Skype me on the tablet- which I could not have done in her home. I also send her a short newsletter with photos and the staff download it and print it out for her. I feel more in contact with her than when she was living in her own home. My brother lives nearby and visits regularly and both of us know my mother is safe, particularly as she is gradually losing more of her speech and understanding of language."

"I cannot speak more highly of the level of care and standards at Avery Mews - wonderful! We contacted Avery Mews whilst trying to find a home for my father as his ability to live alone rapidly declined. As I lived in Australia and my brother in London, we required somebody that we could trust and that was conscientious and the Manager and her staff did not disappoint. The Manager and the Brighterkind team showed real flexibility during a period that my father was admitted to hospital. We were not hassled or pressured through this period and my father eventually moved into a lovely room. Unfortunately, he only spent 3 days in Avery Mews before he passed away. The care team managed to administer CPR on my dad, restarting his heart and giving the family long enough to join him in the hospital to say goodbye before he passed away. I will always be eternally grateful to the genuine warmth the team showed my father, and the immediate actions they took with dad before he passed away."

"I have lived here for 17 months and been well cared for in that time. At first, I used to go to the lounge and take part in activities; also go to the dining room for meals. In the last five months, I have been unwell and confined to my room but all my needs have been really well looked after."

"Auntie was unable to remain at home due to poor eyesight so my brother and I looked at several care homes in the area and this seemed the nest. This was based on the attractiveness of the lounge, dining area, individual rooms plus the very friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. Auntie has now been here 17 months and first impressions have proved correct. In the last 4 months, auntie has been quite ill and confined to her room - usually in bed. The care given has been exceptional - Nothing is too much trouble."

"I cannot thank the staff and everyone at Avery House Care Home enough, their dedication and genuine kindness they showed my mam was truly humbling. They supported her through many difficult times especially at the end of her life, giving her the dignity and respect she deserved. She was happy at Avery Mews and that enabled myself and family to know that she was in safe hands. We would laugh and joke with her, and all the staff always made me feel welcome when visiting. The meals were all prepared to a high standard, the cleanliness and laundry facilities were always immaculate. I would highly recommend Avery House Care Home."

"My Mother who suffered from Alzheimer's went to Avery Mews late last year after being in 3 other care homes for respite recovery. This home is exceptional, there are no words to describe the care and affection she received by every member of staff. I never heard anything other than kindness and complete dedication to all the residents, and the standard of cleanliness and hygiene couldn't be faulted. They looked after my Mother until her death earlier this month. Nothing was too much trouble and she died with dignity and peace."

"My mother was a resident at Avery Mews from July 2016 to March 2017. She had dementia and various illnesses but, whilst she was never sure where she was, she always said, "I like it here" when asked. As care homes go, Avery Mews is one of the best. The standard of accommodation is excellent and the staff are caring in the best sense of the word and treat (sometimes difficult) residents as people and not patients. I have visited Mam there lots of time and have nothing bad to say about it."

"Since Mum's admission in November 2016, it has been clear that an ethos of compassion and respecting individual needs pervade all aspects of care in what has become Mum's home. All staff clearly strive to understand and meet the specific needs of each individual resident and there is a real sense that everyone is cared for, not just physically but also psychologically and emotionally in an effort to enable their transition to this new life that, many like my mum did not find easy. More recently the excellent care given to Mum since admission has been further extended to myself and the rest of her family as we strive to deliver the best possible end of life care for her. My mum has been a very important person in my life and that of my siblings and her grandchildren; we have never wanted anything but the best for her care and have felt really lucky to have found a team and home that have always gone the extra mile to ensure that this wish can and has become a reality."

"Everything about Avery Mews is a very high standard. The manager is extremely friendly and does an excellent job. All the staff seem to genuinely care for the residents and nothing is too much trouble. The building is more like a hotel and the food/restaurant is top quality. At last, we feel Mum is receiving excellent care and when we leave her we know we don't have to worry. Mum is very happy here and that means everything."

"I had to take mother for respite care on the 30th April 2017. After assessment by the manager, she was accepted into Avery Mews Care Home where my mother was very well looked after and made perfectly at home there by the care staff. She was there til the 16th May 2017 when she passed away peacefully."

"My dad became concerned for his care in his previous home and saw Avery Mews in the paper and asked me to get him a visit and moved. The manager was so helpful and organised a visit and dad liked the place so much. When a room came available the manager arranged the transfer as I live so far away. The move went smoothly and he was soon settled in his new room. The care he received immediately made him more settled and he always had nice things to say about the staff! Although he didn't eat much, the food was 100% better. The whole environment was so much better and as I say he felt safe. Unfortunately, for my dad aged 96, his stay was shortlived due to his various ailments which suddenly took a turn for the worse. He was soon to pass away, but the staff took care of him so well in his final hours. My sister and I have been made to feel so welcome back at the home and I don't live near but my sister does and knows she will always be welcome. Dad missed out."

"This was the first respite care I had arranged for my mother who suffers from dementia. On a visit to the home, I was impressed by the high standard of cleanliness and decor in the home. There were plenty of carers and cleaning staff on duty. The residents and their clothing were also very clean. I was shown around the home and greeted warmly by the friendly and knowledgeable staff. When the manager came to our home to carry out her assessment for my mother's care plan, she was very friendly and professional. She assured me my mother would be well looked after. My mother has spent 10 happy days in respite. She has been extremely well cared for - kept scrupulously clean, laundry is done daily, assisted with all her care needs by warm and kind professionals. The staff were sorry to see my mum leave and she told me she had had a lovely time."

"My wife has been in Avery Mews for just over 2 years and the care she gets is excellent. The games and things the staff help her to participate in is very good. The choir on Thursday is top rate including a lot of fun with the two carers who run the choir. My wife is helped to join in with all the activities going on. This helps to keep her happy which is very important to me. All in all a job well done by all the staff."

"I am so happy when I visit my sister to see she is happy and so well looked after. I feel Avery is the best place she could be now at nearly 90. She is now unable to look after herself and her husband of 62 years has sadly now passed away. As her dementia gets worse, it is sad to see her slipping away. But, with the love and care given at Avery she is able to smile. She is having a quality of life now, which we never expected. We feel the lovely staff at Avery have given her that. They bring out something in her we thought was lost - thank you!"

"Avery Mews is a very caring homely place, giving a very safe environment. My Mum in Law is very happy. She is well looked after by staff who are genuinely kind and caring. Nothing is too much trouble. The home is very much home from home. It is a well designed attractive home with good facilities. There are activities and outings. Lovely home cooked food and tasty cakes (mum's favourite bit). Avery was a stand out home when we were looking for the right place for Mum. It is not an easy thing to pass your loved ones into the care of others, but Avery was a very good choice. 1st Class!"

"The care received by my friend was very good especially in the first week after which she developed a water infection. This was no one's fault, however, my friend only had 1 shower during her 2-week stay. Personal hygiene did not seem a high priority. My friend then seemed confused and paranoid. The management were wonderful when explaining these side effects."

"I just want to say how lovely it was to come back after a holiday away in South Africa. Not seeing mum for a whole month but knowing she was being well looked after by such caring loving girls made it possible to even go in the first place. But to walk back into Avery Mews and see mum all happy, smiling and comfy on a sofa in the lounge, enjoying a cuppa and some cake, with a cheeky look in her eye was so good. My mum has never been so happy in such a long time. Thank you."

"Avery Mews has provided care for my mum for over four years now. The staff are caring and compassionate. It has a homely atmosphere and a genuine family feel to it. Staff have been supportive through difficult times. It is a very friendly environment and there is a good selection of activities for residents to participate in. Staff recently made it possible for my mum to attend a family Christmas party at my house. We are so grateful for the care my mum received on the day. Being able to have my mum at home again was such an amazing feeling. It meant that relatives visiting could see her in a more familiar setting and at Christmas, this was really special."

"I moved my mum from Birmingham to Avery Mews in December 2016. I knew as soon as I had my initial visit that it was the place for mum. The staff are very kind, caring, helpful and very supportive of me, my father (the resident), my mother and the other family members affected by my dad's dementia. "From my very first visit to Avery Mews, I found the staff very friendly and welcoming. I was apprehensive to see my mum who's a resident because I live in Australia and hadn't seen my mum since she had been admitted to Avery Mews and I was so reassured by the extremely caring staff who kindly look after my dearest mum. Also very kind in setting up online chat for me to be able to chat to and see mum every week which is my lifeline until I'm next home. I can't thank the staff enough."

"My mum is 84. She suffers from Dementia and has resided in two care homes prior to Avery Mews in Heckmondwike. Previous care homes did not meet Mum's exact needs, she never seemed happy and was regularly tearful on my visits and I was never happy with myself through feeling guilty for her having to be in a care home. Avery Mews is no run of the mill care home, they go above and beyond all my expectations, the staff are here there and everywhere and the home just buzzes with activity focused on a very individual residents needs with both care and support. Every lovely resident has a character and the home deal with individual needs associated with this unforgiving illness."

"From the outset, I liked the homely and welcoming atmosphere at this care home. The majority of carers seem genuinely attached to the residents under their care and want to do the best for them. They proactively look out for any health issues, calling relatives, doctors or ambulances as required. The food is excellent, although could be hotter at times. I feel that my relative is safe here, although the staff quite often seem 'run off their feet' dealing with basic care needs and rushing from call to call, rather than having time to spend interacting with residents. We had a few teething problems where some staff seemed unaware of the agreed care plan/my relative's preferences, and we were forgetting to plug in her call alarm - and this had to be escalated several times after each occurrence. Building maintenance is also a bit slow."

"Avery Mews is a wonderful, light and airy building with good furnishings and decoration. There is always a warm and friendly welcome for visitors and the staff are dedicated, reassuring, helpful, caring and supportive to their charges. The only real concern I have is about the security of the residents' own personal effects, as my friend had only been there a few months before her very expensive diamond ring went missing. I reported it to the staff but very little effort was made to try and establish where it had gone and it has never turned up, though I did a very thorough search of her room myself. She is not allowed out so she couldn't possibly have lost it outside. I know it is unreasonable to expect the staff to be responsible for such items, but I couldn't put it in safekeeping as my friend wouldn't part with it as it had been a present from her late husband. I do think they could have treated my request to find it more seriously and kept me up to date with any results. Nobody mentioned it again after I told them about it. I also have reservations about the menu provided. Although the food is good quality, I do wonder who is in charge of producing the menu as, the day I stayed for lunch, the choice of the main course was lasagne or chicken curry. Now, as all the residents are old, they complained that they were British and wanted at least one choice of something they knew and liked! I reckon the composer must have been young and has little knowledge of old people's habits. That said, apart from the expense of the place, I think it is a good place to be if you need it and can afford it."
