Activities at Spen Court Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Angela Blackburn

Head of Activities

My name is Angela and I am the Head Activities Coordinator here at Spen Court. I get so much satisfaction out of knowing I have made a difference to people’s days and have filled the home with a sense of community and happiness.

We feel it is important to build community connections and maintain our resident’s social interaction outside the care home.

We ensure we deliver a person-centered program of events and activities and build strong relationships with our residents, their families and friends.

Life at Spen Court Care Home

Pride Month

This June, staff and residents at Spen Court have been creating decorations, festooning the home with rainbows and enjoying the colourful celebrations from around the world. Lots of the festivities from different parts of the UK and from around the world are available to watch online and residents have had a fantastic time experiencing the different parades and carnivals on offer.

Pride Month takes place from June 1 to June 30 each year as a way to recognise the influence LGBT people have around the world. June was chosen because that is when the Stonewall Riots took place back in 1969.  Known as the ‘Mother of Pride’, it was Brenda Howard who coordinated the first LGBT Pride March, as well as sparking the idea for a week of events around Pride Day.  These events then developed into the annual LGBT celebrations held every June.

Armed Forces Day

Residents and staff at Spen Court paid their respects to soldiers past and present on Armed Forces Day which took place on Saturday 24 June 2022.

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. This year Spen Court marked the occasion with an afternoon of entertainment from Karen Clegg, who performed a 1940’s medley of songs, while we all waved our flags.

Residents, along with their families and friends, were able to enjoy delicious home-made cakes and pastries courtesy of head chef Nick.

National Carers Week

Residents at Spen Court are celebrating National Carers’ Week, which takes place from June 5-11. Residents wanted to thank all the wonderful staff at the home, whose hard work and dedication make a real difference to the lives of those living in their care.

Carers Week is an annual event to raise awareness of caring, highlighting the challenges carers face, and recognising the contribution they make to our residents, families and communities throughout the UK. The theme for Carers Week this year is ‘recognising and supporting carers in the community’ – this year the organisers are asking people across the UK to come together to recognise the huge contribution carers make to society.

Staff were treated to a Goody Bag as a thank you for all the hard work and dedication they put into both caring for the residents and the home.

Anne Clough, a resident at Spen Court care home commented: “It really is a joy to be able to thank our wonderful carers for all that they do.  They really are heaven sent.”

Historic Hendon

Across our services we had a lovely time joining Rhiannon Watkinson from the RAF Museum London for an interactive talk exploring the exciting and innovative aviation history of Hendon.

Our residents were able to learn about the first flights from the fields at Hendon, the creation of the London Aerodrome and Battle of Britain pilots who flew from RAF Hendon.

The talk also included photographic and film material from the Museum’s archive. Residents across our homes had a fantastic time and we truly enjoyed the virtual experience.

Story telling with Jon Sleigh

Residents across our services had a delightful time during a special virtual sensory storytelling event, led by Art Historian Jon Sleigh from the Historic Royal Palaces.

Jon took us on a journey to discover some of the more unusual and unexpected inhabitants of the palaces and the Tower of London, sharing fascinating stories about the pets at the palaces.

Whilst enjoying the virtual experience, our residents were treated to hot beverages, delicious biscuits, berries and cakes.  It was a truly lovely time for all.

International Nurses Day

Spen Court celebrated the hard work of the nurses that come into the home and senior care team within the home.

Residents made up gift bags as a thank you for all the hard work and dedication they put into the care of the residents.

The gift bags contained a bottle of water, a healthy snack and a couple of sweet treats to help them through the day.
