Activities at Lethen Park Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Amanda McCarthy

Activities Coordinator

We all know that keeping active is important. We have created a wonderful culture within the home and we work together to give residents the best possible experience. We are here to ensure that residents enjoy an environment that is both stimulating and socially active. We ensure the team knows each residents' preferences, so that we can deliver a person-centered program of events and activities. Essential to our homely feel is the strong relationships of trust we build with residents and their families and friends

Resident realises dream

Staff at Lethen Park Care Home in Portlethen have gone above and beyond to help one of their much-loved resident’s dreams come true.  Sandy was a builder by trade and had always wanted to put his considerable skills and knowledge gained over many years to good use once again, so staff at the home set about making his wish a reality.

When Lethen Park had a recent refurbishment, the team knew this was their chance to help Sandy realise his dream.  All the staff were delighted to be a part of making Sandy’s wish come true, as they knew how much it meant to him to know like he was adding value and making a difference.  Working with the contractors, the team planned in some time when Sandy could help and they all wanted to be there to see the smile on his face when he was able to roll up his sleeves, get his overalls on and pitch in.  Activities Lead, Amanda, and Simeon from Prestige Decorators Aberdeen supported Sandy to ensure he didn’t overdo it!

Medical Detection Dogs

Across our services residents had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Emilia from Medical Detection Dogs. Emilia took us on a journey to discover how the organisation began training dogs to support people with complex health conditions, saving their lives on a daily basis.

Using their amazing sense of smell, these dogs can identify odour changes emitted prior an episode and alert the person to take preventative action.

We were introduced to the wonderful dogs and the science behind the sniff.  It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our canine-loving residents.

Big Quiz of the Year

All over the country our care homes and hospitals linked up for Barchester’s Big Quiz of the year!

Residents tested their knowledge with a variety of questions, from historical humdingers and musical musings to pictorial puzzlers and connective conundrums.

Everyone who participated had a fantastic time and enjoyed some friendly competition.

Meet the Reindeers

Across our homes we got into the Christmas spirit of things by joining a festive live virtual experience, led by Des and Kelly from Performing Pets.

Our residents were thrilled to meet the charming furry friends and get up close and personal with the reindeers.

We certainly learnt some interesting facts about the animals and had a fantastic time.

Santa Run

Our Santa run was a huge success! Darren from the Place to Eat Portlethen organises a huge Santa run every year at Lethen park. This is a fun filled evening with hot chocolate and mince pies.

The residents all dance to the music and all enjoyed the community spirit and interactions.

James' Wish Comes True

Resident, James Gordon, at Lethen Park had always wanted to build the Flying Scotsman Train at Christmas time from a train mechanic set, so staff at the home made his Christmas wish a reality proving the old adage, it’s never too late. Lethen Park went to work and recruited a train specialist called Tobi to help James achieve his goals.

James Gordon has lived at  Lethen Park for 4years and is beloved by staff and residents alike. Staff at the home were delighted to be a part of making his Christmas wish come true, as they knew how much it meant to him, and they all wanted to be there to see the smile on his face when his dream was realised.

Staff first found out about James Christmas wish a few months ago and, ever since then, they have been dedicated to helping him achieve it.

In response to this wonderful surprise of James receiving his own Train set building kit, James said “I was on the verge of tears. It is such an amazing feeling to know that such a loving group of people care so much about me that they helped me to live out my Christmas wish – and I didn’t even ask. I can not thank Tobi enough the young volunteer for helping me build it, We are now good friends”
