Activities at Lanercost House Care Home

Our dedicated Activities Coordinators offer a wide range of mentally and physically stimulating activities for residents and families to enjoy. There are regular outings in the minibus to places of interest, such as local cafes, garden centres and parks, as well as visits from entertainers, musicians and singers - and also from PAT dogs. We host various events, such as themed days, cheese & wine evenings, in addition to offering one-to-one activity sessions, including pampering, games and puzzles. Our activities staff strive to ensure residents participate in any way they can with activities that reflect their capabilities and interests.

Emily Stubbs

Head of Activities

I joined the Lanercost House family in June 2021 as a Care Assistant and then joined the activities team in May 2022.

I love bringing joy and fun to residents, relatives, and staff on a daily basis as well as planning and organising themed days, events, and celebrations.

I think the activities’ role is very important for Residents' well-being.  Whether they like to keep active with armchair exercises, join in with our weekly quiz or hop in the minibus for a day out - there is something for everyone.  I aim to ensure that each Resident's interests and hobbies are supported.

I am passionate about creative and sensory activities and I love to sing and dance together with Residents.  I love my job!

Life at Lanercost House Care Home

Residents enjoy virtual trip to Iceland

We took a wonderful virtual trip to Iceland and visited the SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary to have an inside look into the daily care of their two resident beluga whales: Little White and Little Grey.

Our residents were introduced to the history of the Beluga Whale Sanctuary and learnt more about its mission to provide a more natural home for belugas in human care with a first-hand look at how the dedicated team are not only caring for the whales, but preparing for their future in the sea sanctuary!

It was an enjoyable event for everyone, learning more about the amazing beluga whales and how they are cared for at the sanctuary.

Residents get snap happy

To mark World Photography Day, staff and residents were treated to a live streaming photography masterclass courtesy of top professional photographer, Damian Bailey.

A professional photographer since 2003, Damian has won Wedding Photographer of the Year and is listed as one of London’s top wedding photographers, having photographed over 700 weddings.  Damian travels all over the country shooting weddings, events and families and loves to help people create memories by capturing wonderful images that will be passed on from generation to generation.

Damian’s talk explained how he goes about capturing special moments and what makes a great photo in terms of technique and composition.  From landscapes to portrait photos, Damian shared his hints and tips for getting the best shots whatever the subject matter.

Care Assistants recognised for long service

Congratulations to these two amazing carers here at Lanercost House. Each were recognised for 10 years long service award today, for their continued service, dedication and expertise in their care role’s. Care staff are special in every way and we are glad we can show our appreciation, we thank you and continue to be grateful for all that you do.

National Relaxation Day

We spent time unwinding and slowing down through relaxing our minds, bodies and senses in recognition of Relaxation Day.

Our residents enjoyed a relaxing yoga and meditation session, as well as, a wellness and pamper afternoon with treatments of their choice.

We had a discussion about different ways of relaxing and we all enjoyed our chill day.

English National Ballet

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Lanercost House care home were treated to a unique performance from English National Ballet to celebrate International Youth Day on August 12.

Prior to the day itself, members of English National Ballet’s youth dance company, ENBYouthCo, and their Creative Director, Richard Bermange, asked residents to submit their memories of going to see films over the years.  The cast then used these evocative descriptions, along with Arielle Smith’s digital production of Jolly Folly, as inspiration for their performance.

On the day, residents were able to watch a performance of A Comedy in Long-shot, a dance film performed by ENBYouthCo, participate in a chair-based, creative dance workshop along with the cast and observe an open rehearsal where Richard and the young dancers created a performance inspired by the residents’ childhood memories.

Don't worry 'Beer-happy'

You better beer-lieve that residents at Lanercost House care home in Carlisle, were more than happy to raise a glass, and sample some top craft ales, bitters and lagers, in celebration of International Beer Day.

The hospitality team at Lanercost House set up a Portable Beer Bar for a real pub experience and brought in a range of brew-tiful British and International ales for residents to sample.  Residents enjoyed a beer tasting and choosing their favourite beer from our International Beer List.

Anna Paule, Operations Manager at the home, said: “We love socialising and celebrating all kind of events. International Beer Day is a day that the residents really enjoy, who doesn’t enjoy a cold beer on a hot summer’s day!”
