Activities at Lanercost House Care Home

Our dedicated Activities Coordinators offer a wide range of mentally and physically stimulating activities for residents and families to enjoy. There are regular outings in the minibus to places of interest, such as local cafes, garden centres and parks, as well as visits from entertainers, musicians and singers - and also from PAT dogs. We host various events, such as themed days, cheese & wine evenings, in addition to offering one-to-one activity sessions, including pampering, games and puzzles. Our activities staff strive to ensure residents participate in any way they can with activities that reflect their capabilities and interests.

Emily Stubbs

Head of Activities

I joined the Lanercost House family in June 2021 as a Care Assistant and then joined the activities team in May 2022.

I love bringing joy and fun to residents, relatives, and staff on a daily basis as well as planning and organising themed days, events, and celebrations.

I think the activities’ role is very important for Residents' well-being.  Whether they like to keep active with armchair exercises, join in with our weekly quiz or hop in the minibus for a day out - there is something for everyone.  I aim to ensure that each Resident's interests and hobbies are supported.

I am passionate about creative and sensory activities and I love to sing and dance together with Residents.  I love my job!

Life at Lanercost House Care Home

A day at the races

Everyone at Lanercost House Care Home in Carlisle were involved in fun full activities to celebrate Grand National.

The ladies at our home had a great excuse to put on their hats in recognition of the Ladies Day at the Grand National, held annually at Aintree Racecourse.

The Ladies Day is held alongside horse racing, and is famous not only for the action on the course, but the fashion and entertainment of it.

Residents and staff are taking part in our own Grand National sweepstake to make the horse race more exciting. Everyone wants to see their chosen runners winning the race!

Queen's Green Canopy initiative

Residents at Lanercost House care home and pen pals from Newtown Primary School in Carlisle have been branching out in support of the Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique tree planting campaign to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) invites the nation to ‘plant a tree for the Jubilee’ to create a legacy in honour of the Queen’s reign that will benefit future generations. As well as planting new trees, the QGC will dedicate a network of 70 ancient woodlands across the UK and identify 70 ancient trees to celebrate her 70 years of service.

When residents heard about the initiative, they couldn’t wait to show their support. There was much debate amongst the residents to decide what type of tree they should plant and where it should go in the garden. In the end it was agreed that Wild Cherry, Elder, Crab Apple were most apt and that they should go in our main garden where they can be seen and enjoyed by everyone. We asked our pen pals from Newtown Primary school to come and help us with this initiative which went really well. We planted not only our chosen trees but some flowers too. Planting season is October to March so it was agreed to wait for a milder day so that everyone could take part in planting the trees. The trees were supplied by Woodland Trust and delivered on time for this special event.

The Astor's at Cliveden

Our residents came together to enjoy an exciting virtual talk courtesy of the team at National Trust Talks Service.  The illustrated talk took us closer to one of Cliveden’s most famous families, the Astors. Our residents were able to discover what motivated William Waldorf Astor, America’s richest man, to purchase Cliveden in 1893 and how the estate became the centre of high society in the 1920 s and 30 s thanks to his son Waldorf and daughter in law Nancy Astor.

The Astors time at Cliveden came to an end in the 1960 s after the estate became infamously associated with Profumo Affair, but the house and garden continue to reflect their innovations and passions.  We all had a brilliant time.

Walk through a landscape

We had a lovely time joining Holly and Marie-Therese from the Wallace Collection, for a virtual introduction to the Collection, followed by a sensory exploratory walk through one of the museum’s most famous landscape paintings.  The Collection ranges from Old Master paintings to 18th century French furniture, arms and armour.  We all had a wonderful time and cannot wait to put our creative skills to a test and paint some landscapes in the upcoming days.

Book corner with Angela Cobbin

We had a lovely time joining Angela Cobbin for a theatre-inspired virtual talk about her book ‘My Name is Not Wigs’.  ‘My Name Is Not Wigs’ is the ultimate read for fans of witty behind-the-curtains memoirs, especially those with a penchant for the bright lights of stage and screen: tears and accolades aplenty!

Pancakes and St David's Day

The staff and residents at Lanercost House care home in Carlisle have been flipping and turning pancakes all morning in preparation for their annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race.

Lanercost House has marked this year’s Pancake Day with a pancake flipping competition and of course, lots of pancakes! We didn’t forget to welcome spring as well as today is the 1st of March - St. David`s Day!

Residents and staff members at the home, flipped more than 80 pancakes, serving them up with sweet and savoury fillings for all the eager staff and residents.

Jackie, a kitchen assistant at Lanercost House, said: “My secret to the best pancakes is all in the whipping. Give it some elbow grease when mixing the batter and you’ll get perfect pancakes every time. I like experimenting with the fillings – my favourites are chocolate spread and banana and of course, good old-fashioned lemon and sugar!”
