Activities at Woodhorn Park Care Home

Activities make up the most important part of all our days at Woodhorn park, so we ensure a variety of social events are available that reflect the interests of all the people we support. In our Memory Lane community, we have group conversations and regularly reminiscence about past experiences, which is something that people living with dementia really enjoy. Many residents love gardening, baking, outings, pet care and gentle exercise, which we provide, along with many other wholesome activities, as it is essential that life at Woodhorn Park is fun and active.

Residents remember the fallen

Woodhorn Park commemorated the signing of the Armistice Day agreement on the day that the guns finally fell silent.  They joined the rest of the United Kingdom in holding a two-minute silence at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month.

As well as marking Armistice Day by wearing poppies and observing the national two minute silence, residents took part in therapeutic activities such as making poppy displays, listening to old wartime songs, reading war poems and reminiscing.

Pumpkin carving

Here at Woodhorn Park we got into the spooky Halloween spirit of things by creating an autumnal display with painted and carved pumpkins, flowers and wreaths.

We hosted a fun-filled party in the afternoon with delicious Halloween inspired treats, mocktails and themed music.

Some of our residents preferred to paint and decorate pumpkins and to dress up for the occasion, others got involved in themed quizzes and games, and enjoyed watching Halloween films.

We all had a spooktacular time.

Top tips for creative writing

We had a great time joining journalist and novelist, Mike Gayle, for an intriguing virtual interview, during which he shared top tips for creative writing with our residents and read passages from his latest book, All the Lonely People.

We were thrilled to find out about Mike’s background, to understand what led him to become a writer and his creative process.

It was a lovely talk, enjoyed by all, especially by our keen writers at the home.

Cruising with Unilever

We had a lovely time joining Paul Hawkins and Lisa Richards from Unilever for an exciting Virtual Cruise experience.

Our residents were welcomed with mocktails as Lisa and Paul took them on a magical journey to 3 mystery destinations, which were uncovered after a few clues.

Paul demonstrated how to create a few of the local traditional dishes, which our residents had the opportunity to try too.

The event evoked lots of great memories and it was truly enjoyed by all.

Residents celebrate Maritime Day

We visited the Newbiggin By The Sea Maritime Museum to celebrate World Maritime Day, Residents enjoyed a private tour of the museum led by the manager and one of the trustees.  Residents used the visit to talk and reflect on the role of seafarers, in safety, maritime security, and environmental protection and thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

World Heart Day

Here at Woodhorn Park we celebrated World Heart Day – a global campaign during which individuals, families, communities, and governments around the world participate in activities to take charge of their heart health and that of others.

During the day, our residents got involved in a creative session, producing heart shaped crafts and took part in a short exercise activity.

We explored different healthy recipes and learnt interesting facts about our hearts and how we can adopt a healthier lifestyle.
