Activities at The Cedars Bourne Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Helen Hudson

Activities Coordinator

Hello. I’m Helen, the Activities Coordinator at The Cedars. I joined the team in 2021 and I have lots of skills that I can use to create an interesting and varied programme of activities, events and celebrations for residents to enjoy. I am a qualified holistic therapist and offer an holistic approach to activities in the home, I love creating new activities that our residents enjoy, taking residents out on day trips and promoting wellbeing through lots of different activities. When I am not at work I love playing my clarinet, crocheting and art - I use all of these in my role.

Life at The Cedars Bourne Care Home

New Year's Eve celebrations

"We'll drink a cup of kindness yet, For the sake of auld lang syne"

Eve and Andy of Stonestreet Sounds gave us the most magical afternoon to see in the New Year. It was nostalgic, thought provoking, interactive and engaging. A myriad of songs accompanied beautiful scenes of the local area and themes of times gone by, which was enjoyed by residents, staff and visitors alike. Residents were thrilled to see their name come up on the screen accompanied by their own musical requests. Seeing staff and residents come together to celebrate was the perfect way to see in 2024.

Metal Detection Dogs

Across our services residents had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Emilia from Medical Detection Dogs.

Emilia took us on a journey to discover how the organisation began training dogs to support people with complex health conditions, saving their lives on a daily basis.

Using their amazing sense of smell, these dogs can identify odour changes emitted prior an episode and alert the person to take preventative action.

We were introduced to the wonderful dogs and the science behind the sniff.  It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our canine-loving residents.

Home welcome back Busy Bees Nursery

The Cedars Care Home, in Bourne were thrilled to welcome back the children from Busy Bees Nursery and Preschool for their weekly intergenerational playgroup. This group meets every Wednesday afternoon, and allows residents and children aged 2-5 to enjoy music, games and activities together at the home.

Resident and ex-teacher Janet Racklyeft ran the session, with a mix of parachute games followed by a sing-a-long of popular nursery rhymes. The children really enjoyed themselves, and behaved perfectly. They asked if Janet would like to go back to the nursery with them, but she politely declined!

Barchester’s Big Quiz of the year!

All over the country our care homes and hospitals linked up for Barchester’s Big Quiz of the year!

Residents tested their knowledge with a variety of questions, from historical humdingers and musical musings to pictorial puzzlers and connective conundrums.

Everyone who participated had a fantastic time and enjoyed some friendly competition.

Minibus Trip to Waterside

Our final minibus trip of the year took us back to the winter wonderland at Waterside Garden Centre. Audrey, Dorothy and Peggy had a magical time exploring the stunning displays and doing a bit of last minute Christmas shopping before enjoying a festive treat in the cafe. Thank you again to our amazing volunteer Sandra Ridley for helping us on another fun day out.

Paint-a-Pot

Paint-a-Pot place visited us twice this month for a two part creative activity. Residents each had the opportunity to make three clay hanging decorations for their rooms- an angel, a Christmas tree and a Christmas gnome. These were taken to be fired before our residents painted them. Derek and Chris at Paint A Pot Place made these sensory sessions really fun, and we are so proud of what we have made!
