Activities at Scarborough Hall Care Home
Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.
Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience, and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Celebrating life at Scarborough Hall Care Home
Burns Night
This month's themed dining experience was orientated around Burns Night. The activity and hospitality team worked together to curate a bespoke experience for a selection of residents whose turn it was to take part in our themed monthly event. We enjoyed an amazing three-course meal that was both colourful and delicious. The residents loved chatting about holidays in Scotland, sharing memories and experiences. Sheila mentioned that she once lived in Scotland and said you have to be tough to cope with the weather, as it can be very cold.
We listened to bagpipes and enjoyed a relaxing experience filled with great company. The afternoon was finished with teas and coffees while continuing our conversations about holidays and what it was like living there.

Burns celebrations at Scarborough Hall
Residents prepared a traditional Burns Night Supper as they hosted their bespoke monthly themed dining experience to the tune of bagpipes, the fun continued throughout the day.
Staff and residents at the home were involved in a number of activities including craft clubs and creative discussions; The residents loved chatting about holidays in Scotland, sharing memories and experiences, this was a fantastic way to mark the Scottish institution, including giving the time-honoured address to the ‘Great chieftain O’ the pudding race’ – the haggis.
General Manager, Charlotte Nurse, thought it was a perfect occasion to celebrate an evening steeped in age-old tradition as well as getting in a spot of Scotch whisky tasting and reading a selection of Burns’ poems

Space to Be Museum Visit
We enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Space to Be at the Scarborough Art Gallery.
We spent the afternoon making Christmas cards for our loved ones using all kinds of recycled paper, all while sipping a lovely cup of tea.
It was great to be joined by another local care home group, and everyone’s cards turned out absolutely amazing.

Pyjama Day
The team wore their PJs to raise money for children in need. In total, we raised £17.72 — every little counts for this worthwhile cause. Children in Need is a UK charity that supports disadvantaged children and young people, helping to provide essential resources, mental-health support, community programmes, and opportunities that can change lives.
The resident thought it was a great idea and can’t wait for Christmas T-shirt day.

International Coffee Day
We celebrated International Coffee Day in style this year. We held our coffee tasting activity in the reception café bar, where we tried numerous shots of coffee and picked our favourite.
We watched the origins of coffee and how coffee is made on YouTube, followed by the Oomph Demand coffee word search. Doreen said, "The sweet ones are my favourite. I like the caramel latte".
Lunch club outing
Residents from each of our three floors, activity member Jess and carer Emily enjoyed getting together for a trip out in the minibus during our lunch club outing. The group enjoyed visiting the Scarborough Flyer pub, which is in our local town centre, for a good old pub lunch and a pint.
The group devoured a selection of sharer plates and reminisced about their lives before the care home whilst watching the world go by. These simple yet meaningful experiences are integral for making and maintaining meaningful friendships amongst peers as well as building connections and rapport with team members.

A Christmas visit from Jenny!
We had a wonderful visit from Jenny the donkey at our Christmas fayre.
She spent the afternoon greeting guests and visiting residents around the home, bringing smiles and happiness to everyone she met.

Christmas Fayre
Residents had an absolutely wonderful time getting creative for our Christmas Fayre! From painting and decorating festive logs to designing beautiful jars for sea-glass ornaments and succulent displays, the room was filled with colour, laughter, and holiday cheer. Everyone threw themselves into the activity, sharing ideas, trying new designs, and admiring each other’s creations.
It was a joyful, hands-on workshop that brought out creativity, conversation, and plenty of smiles — a truly magical way to kick off the festive season!

Home celebrate 10-years long service
A senior carer has received a prestigious ten-Year Service Award in celebration of working at Barchester Healthcare for insert ten years.
Ray, now senior care assistant, started at Barchester in November 2015 and has worked with residents and their relatives to ensure that their needs have been met over the years.
Congratulations, Ray!

Pumpkin competition
At Scarborough Hall Skigh, Jess, Sarah, Charlotte and Liz have all been tasked to see who could create the best pumpkin using paper Mache. The pumpkins will all go on display for the residents and family members to vote for their favourite in time for Halloween.
The photo is Skigh and Frank making the pumpkin, making their pumpkin in the Sitwell Suite.
Big Garden Bird Watch
Each year here at Scarborough Hall we love to take part in the RSPV Big Garden Bird Watch. Many of the residents at the home love and appreciate nature, so it is always important for us to be involved. In the days leading up to the event, themed activities could be seen taking place throughout the house. Residents enjoyed creating their own unique designs of all kinds of different birds which were used to decorate the café bar during our live event activity, where we got the opportunity to learn all sorts of interesting and exciting facts about a variety of birds that can be seen on our grounds.
We also really enjoyed a bird-themed quiz where we were able to test our knowledge of the things we had learnt at the live event. Residents loved having a go at imitating the different bird calls and became quite competitive with one another. Laughter and frivolity could be heard all around!
On Friday, residents enjoyed taking part in the Big Bird Watch and recorded their findings. This activity was spread out across the week before the event, so there was something for everyone who wished to be involved. This aided in achieving the inclusive culture of the home.

Christmas wreath making workshop
We got creative with Christmas wreath making for the Christmas Fayre.
The wreaths look fantastic, and everyone worked so hard, especially our chief bow maker, Skigh!
The craft club was especially popular this month as we were making items to raise funds for Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary and the dementia-friendly hug dolls for the home.

Christmas cards
At Scarborough Hall Care Home, we’ve been getting into the festive spirit by creating Christmas cards for our loved ones.
There’s been glitter and sparkle everywhere as residents enjoy crafting together. Over the coming days, we’ll be making cards with everyone in the home, so each resident has something special to give to their family and friends this Christmas.

Art exhibition
In September, we had a wonderful trip out to the Old Parcels Office to see the Yorkshire Coast by Rail exhibition.
It was lovely walking around looking at the miniature trains, posters, and history boards. Skigh said, “I had a lovely chat with Suzie, who told me about her experiences on trains. We talked about how they’ve changed over the years from carriages to the modern trains we have today.”

Dementia friendly church service
Our recent visit to Queen Street Methodist Church for their Dementia Friendly Service. The residents and the team had a wonderful time singing hymns, sharing fellowship, and enjoying coffee and cake afterwards.
