Activities at Mortain Place Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Alex Leftley

Activities Coordinator

I was working in the print trade when a friend of mine became very unwell and I had to find a nursing home for her. Due to the dedication of the staff, my friend had another 18 months and I was able to take her out after being house bound for many years.

I felt that I wanted to do a job that made a difference and became a carer. I went back to school and redone my GCSE,s and then went onto do my level 3 diploma and am always enhancing my skills and knowledge. I came to Mortain Place as a senior carer on Normandy Gardens and worked my way up to Community Lead. I have chosen to move to the activities team to help support the life enrichment programme and help improve the life experience’s of our residents.

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

What a week we have had! It started with the very talented Terry Hobbs doing an art display, followed by The MasterPiece Studio bringing our Christmas baubles back for our Christmas trees!
Elf day brought Knockhatch Adventure Park and Seahaven FM 96.3 and 95.6 to judge our Christmas trees, which everyone has been working on, then Sing with Julie  came to help us rehearse our carolling and brought us a Christmas jumper for our pet dog.
Eastbourne girl guides came in for carols and poetry.
Christmas jumper day started with Petpals bringing in a goat called Rolo and then we were treated to Steve Dunnet, singing some of the swing classics.
Friday brought us East Sussex Hearing signing carols followed by Tilsmore entertaining our residents with a Christmas concert,
Rocky's  brought their sweet shop and Kingsmere Community Assciation joined us for boys night!
And to finish the week off with the Community Champion Eastbourne Wheelie Big vehicle show!

Lads Night

It is important to us that all feel included in activities at Mortain Place, so we listened to our residents and the gentlemen agreed they wanted a boys night! These now take place every other Tuesday and have different themes. The gents have so far enjoyed beer tasting, a pool tournament, and a 'get to know me' chat.

If you wish to get involved please do give us a call. on 01323 465150.

Fireworks & Feast

We would like to thank everyone who came to our firework night on Sunday 5th November! And a big well done to Alex & Steve for putting on the display.
We put on jacket potatoes with cheese, beans & salad, as well as lots of sweets & snacks for our little guests.
The girl guides of Eastbourne also joined us as well as friends and family of residents and our local community.

OUR MANAGING DIRECTOR IS RECOGNISED FOR HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIAL CARE

Staff and residents at Mortain Place are celebrating because their fantastic Managing Director, Natasha Lazovic, has been nominated as a finalist in the Great British Care Awards 2023, having been shortlisted in the prestigious Outstanding Contribution to Social Care category.

Natasha came to the UK in 1994 from Serbia and commenced her training as a nurse.  Natasha, extremely caring by nature, has had an amazing career, and with dedication and determination has progressed from a registered nurse to Managing Director, working in a variety of care settings, both in the NHS and private sector, with London being a main base.  Natasha joined Barchester in 2014 as Regional Director leading 10 homes, which then doubled to 20 as Senior Regional Director, and as Managing Director now oversees more than 80 care homes in the South Division.  Handling an extremely challenging role, Natasha leads the teams with a calm can-do attitude, she has an amazingly inspirational story and truly deserves to win.

Natasha says: “I am very humbled to be nominated for this award, and I am very proud to be part of the shortlist, and to be representing Barchester as a finalist.  It is an honour to be recognised for doing a job I love and I wish to continue to make outstanding contributions going forward, I am hugely passionate about the care sector.”

Congratulations Natasha!

Mortain Place takes to the tracks

Some of our residents hopped into Go-Kart’s and took to the tracks at Knockhatch Adventure Park last week. Driving in pairs (one resident, one care assistant) they raced multiple laps around the circular track, grinning and waving at guests of the park.

Knockhatch supported the home with extra staffing to allow the best experience possible.

Our residents reminisced about using pedal cars in their youth, compared to motorised ones now and enjoyed racing each other, although no one could keep score.

Alex Leftley, lead activities coordinator said “It is great to be able to work with the local community to be able to provide the best experiences possible for our residents. We like to think outside the box and ditch the stigma of what people think a typical care home looks like. I am proud of the job I get to do.”
