Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Life at Lucerne House Care Home

Toe Tapping Fun

We were toe tapping and singing the morning away today when we were joined by Anthony Powell and his music for all occasions event. Anthony performs a range of music from musical, pop and some classic songs from our childhood.

Trip to Greendale Farm

We had a great time on one of our trips out in August. Two of our residents, accompanied by their wives, hopped into our mini bus and took a drive to Greendale Farm. It was amazing, seeing all the animals and taking in all the sights and sounds. We especially enjoyed meeting Oscar the Ostrich. To finish our visit, we enjoyed reminiscing over a hot drink.

Baking for the community

We have been super busy at Lucerne House, baking and decorating cakes for the community to enjoy at Chatterbox Cafe which happens each Friday. Our residents have attended Chatterbox most weeks and wanted to do something to help. The team of volunteers at Chatterbox have us on their rota to help with providing cakes, on a semi regular basis, which we are delighted to support. We have had a great time making them and hope that everyone who tries the cakes, enjoys them.

Trip to Dawlish Warren

One afternoon in July, we set off to Dawlish Warren. It was a beautiful day, with a lovely sea breeze to enjoy along with an ice cream. It was also a chance to think back to our younger years with residents reminiscing about swimming in the sea, holidays abroad and memories with their children. On our way back to the bus, we saw this sign, which we think totally captures our thoughts and feelings, for all of our wonderful residents.

Reconnecting with our pasts

During the warmer months, we have been getting out and about as much as possible. On one of our outings we visited Ide village, where some of our residents used to live. Fred had lived in the village for over 70 years and Jeanette used to pick her grandchildren up from school there. Whilst on our trip many of Fred’s previous neighbours came to say hello and we had a lovely time, reminiscing, lapping up the sunshine and taking in the sights of the beautiful village.

Ice cream van visit

We really enjoyed our visit from Liddicones Ice Cream Van at Lucerne House. Residents, visitors and staff have all enjoyed a whippy ice cream and some have been relaxing in our gardens, lounges, conservatories. It was also a great accompaniment whilst watching the tennis. We will continue to welcome the ice cream van to Lucerne House over the summer period
