Activities at Dovedale Court Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Brian Sandham

Activities Coordinator

My name is Brian, I’m the activities coordinator down here at Dovedale. I’m new to the care sector, I’ve been a photographer and photography tutor since 2004 dealing with different ages groups and abilities.   I’m looking forward to putting my people skills to good use down here at Dovedale.

I might be new to the care sector but I’m super looking forward to spreading a bit of extra sunshine and cheer around the home.

A night at the Illuminations

We boarded the mini bus and off for our popular annual visit to see the illuminations.  With a full bus we took in the lights accompanied by Mcflurries ice-cream all round, which went down a treat!

We even spotted that stunning Spitfire on the round about. If you've not ventured that way yet this year then go pay it a visit. Blackpool has done a fab job this year.

Pamper time

The ladies visited our in house salon where they were treated to a sample of creams, lotions and spritzers with refreshments and nibbles in easy reach.  There was soothing music in the background.  The ladies shared their fond memories of their regular trips to the hairdressers and said “there was lots of gossip, chatter and laughter when you were there”.

Royal Botanic Garden

Our homes enjoyed a wonderful virtual tour of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh with Community Engagement Manager, Charlotte Walker, and Botanic Cottage Operations Co-ordinator, Laura Gallagher.

The residents were thrilled to learn more about the history of the beautiful Garden, which is now a home to an impressive plant collection from around the world.

Charlotte and Laura also gave a demonstration of making fresh herbal tea and were happy to answer our questions.  The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all who joined.

A walk on the wild side

Residents and staff took a walk on the wild side when they took a trip to the Zoo.  After seeing the animals everyone enjoyed a picturesque walk around the park before settling down in the late summer sun for a picnic prepared by staff at the home.

Brian, activities coordinator said “The residents had a wonderful afternoon and it was great to see them so lively and animated, talking about the animals.

“We know that interaction with animals can have a positive effect on residents’ health and wellbeing, especially for those living with dementia.”

Beautiful bouquets

Our homes had a fantastic time joining members of the Wallace Collection for an amazing sensory session.

During the live virtual experience, our residents explored one of the museum’s most beautiful Dutch flower paintings and learnt new drawing techniques.

We cannot wait to put our creative skills to a test and produce beautiful paintings of our own.

Everyone enjoyed the lovely talk, we all had lots of fun and it’s given us plenty of ideas.

Cheese and wine

What a fab week we've had. Monday we had a wine and cheese evening and finished the week with a dance . We visited St Margaret's parish church and was met their kind hospitality. We do have fun and games.
