Activities at Wykeham House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Rachel Stevens

Activities Lead

I joined Wykeham House in October 2022 but I have worked doing activities in care homes since I left College, I began volunteering in a local home when I was 15 years old and then took on my first job in a care home when I was 18. I have enjoyed extending my knowledge to improve my work and have a Level 2 in Dementia Awareness, Domestic Abuse Awareness and Mental Health Awareness. I have also attended courses on End-Of-Life Activities as well as Dementia focused Activities. I love what I do and for me it is important that every day is a new day for our residents with new opportunities and a smiling face to come with it.

Live Cookery demonstration

To celebrate National Vegetarian Week, staff and residents at Wykeham House care home were treated to an interactive virtual cookery demo courtesy of chef, Alex Connell, from Vegetarian for Life.

Chef Alex whipped up some tasty, healthy vegetarian snacks in a live, interactive cookery demo. Much to residents’ delight, head chef Robert had prepared the same recipes so that residents could try all the dishes. Residents sampled delicious, light and summery veggie dishes including Borlotti bean and dill pate, Greek fritters with Tzatziki and Coronation 'chicken' pastries. All finished off with a sweet and simple but totally yummy banana bread.

VE Day Celebrations

Residents marked the anniversary of VE Day in style by throwing a 1940s afternoon tea party to remember.  The home was decorated in red, white and blue and enjoyed an afternoon of music and dancing.

Waffle making afternoon

Who doesn't love a sweet treat with a nice cup of tea. Residents really enjoyed making and decorating waffles. They chose their decorations and shared them with everyone to enjoy.

Entertainment is back

Oh how the Residents have missed live music. But we invited Roy into the garden and he sang a whole set of some much loved classics. There was even time for some requests too. Lots of foot tapping and smiling faces.

The return of mini bus trips

It is absolutely wonderful to be able to take our residents out for trips again.  We have all been waiting for this day and we are so thankful it is finally here. Some got to enjoy a trip to Earlswood lakes for a hot chocolate and to feed the ducks.

Peggy, said: “Staff here have been brilliant throughout lock down putting on all kind of different events to keep us entertained, but there is nothing like getting out for some fresh air."

Celebrating the Queen's 95th Birthday

Wykeham House marked the Queen’s 95th birthday in style by brewing up a storm for National Tea Day and having an afternoon tea party.

Head chef Robert whipped up a tasty selection of freshly-baked biscuits, pastries and cakes for the occasion, all washed down with a selection of different teas.  Residents took part in royal and tea-themed sessions including a virtual tours of a royal palace, high tea whilst watching old clips of royal tours and occasions, finishing the day with a right royal quiz,
