Activities at Wykeham House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Rachel Stevens

Activities Lead

I joined Wykeham House in October 2022 but I have worked doing activities in care homes since I left College, I began volunteering in a local home when I was 15 years old and then took on my first job in a care home when I was 18. I have enjoyed extending my knowledge to improve my work and have a Level 2 in Dementia Awareness, Domestic Abuse Awareness and Mental Health Awareness. I have also attended courses on End-Of-Life Activities as well as Dementia focused Activities. I love what I do and for me it is important that every day is a new day for our residents with new opportunities and a smiling face to come with it.

Life at Wykeham House Care Home

We celebrate International Flower Day!

Residents felt flower powerful today as we celebrated International Flower Day which promotes the psychological boost that flowers can give to people. From growing and nurturing plants and flowers, to gifting flowers to show love and appreciation, and sometimes just the simple act of admiring their beauty – flowers have the power to make someone’s day.

The beautiful displays residents made are on show around the home to brighten up our week!

And we won the Wooden Spoon!

Its not the winning its the taking part is how the saying goes! Our quiz team did their best at the BIG Barchester quiz at the end of 2021 and whilst we had lots of fun our prize was the wooden spoon for the lowest score across all Barchester's care homes. Staff with the help of Wendy, Virginia and Marilyn all enjoyed the afternoon and I'm sure we will do better next time

Birthday celebrations!

Our resident Alan celebrated his birthday today - 88 years young! He was all smiles as he cut his homemade cake which all our residents enjoyed with their afternoon tea. Many happy returns Alan

Barchester Christmas cake competition entry

Our residents put together a recipe and with the help of our chef made and decorated a Christmas cake to enter into the annual Barchester competition.
Sadly we were not the winners this year but we did enjoy making and eating it!

Care Quality Commission rate our home 'GOOD'

We couldn’t be prouder of our amazing team. As everyone at Wykeham house has had the best reason to celebrate. Following a recent CQC inspection the home has been awarded GOOD in all areas. Here are just some of the wonderful comments received:
“Julia the General Manager is amazing, approachable and a good listener. She pulled us through Covid & was behind every single one of us every step of the way".
Whilst another said “ The staff here are quite brilliant. I have never met a carer who didn’t want to listen to me”
We will continue to celebrate & thank each & every one of the staff & it’s residents, that make our home the best!

Welcoming our local community for Tea!

We welcomed the Horley Active Retirement Group for afternoon tea and a chat. Anna our chef made cakes and biscuits to go with the refreshments, we are looking forward to welcoming them back again soon.
