Activities at Thistle Hill Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Happy Fathers Day

Happy Father's Day from everyone at Thistle Hill!

Today a few of our gentlemen took a part in a little project we've called 'My father's hands'.

Photographs are showing hands and the objects that can be associated with the individuals and embracing their personalities and life history.

Come Fly With Me

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Thistle Hill Care Centre in Knaresborough, were treated to an hour in the company of Community Engagement Manager, Rhiannon Watkinson, from the RAF Museum in Hendon, London.

Coinciding with the anniversary month of the D Day landings on 6th June 1944, residents joined Rhiannon for an interactive talk about historic Hendon exploring its exciting and innovative aviation history. They heard about the first flights from the fields at Hendon, the creation of the London Aerodrome and all about Battle of Britain pilots who flew from RAF Hendon. The talk included fascinating photographic and film material from the Museum’s archive and a chance for residents to share their stories and ask questions.

Historic Hendon

Across our services we had a lovely time joining Rhiannon Watkinson from the RAF Museum London for an interactive talk exploring the exciting and innovative aviation history of Hendon.

Our residents were able to learn about the first flights from the fields at Hendon, the creation of the London Aerodrome and Battle of Britain pilots who flew from RAF Hendon.

The talk also included photographic and film material from the Museum’s archive. Residents across our homes had a fantastic time and we truly enjoyed the virtual experience.

Trip to Wetherby

We had a wonderful time today at Wetherby!

Some of us from Thistle Hill care home enjoyed a lovely trip to the river, where we savoured some delicious ice cream and admired the beautiful wildlife. It was such a treat to feel the warm sun on our faces and share some laughs with our friends.

We can't wait for our next outing!

Story telling with Jon Sleigh

Residents across our services had a delightful time during a special virtual sensory storytelling event, led by Art Historian Jon Sleigh from the Historic Royal Palaces.

Jon took us on a journey to discover some of the more unusual and unexpected inhabitants of the palaces and the Tower of London, sharing fascinating stories about the pets at the palaces.

Whilst enjoying the virtual experience, our residents were treated to hot beverages, delicious biscuits, berries and cakes.  It was a truly lovely time for all.

A Royal Party

Staff and residents at the home put their heads together and came up with a plan for their celebrations fit for a King.  Over the bank holiday weekend the home held a Coronation garden party with a barbecue freshly cooked by the kitchen department, followed by live music entertainment from the amazing local group Coconut Workshop Singers. The whole home came together to celebrate our new King and talk about the new era the country is entering.
