Activities at Thistle Hill Care Home

Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Life at Thistle Hill Care Home

Christmas Fete brings community together

Staff, residents, relatives and the local community came together at Thistle Hill to enjoy a wonderful Christmas Fete.

There were all kinds of stalls on offer manned by volunteers, friends and family and local stall holders came along to sell their wares too.  There were delicious cakes, jewellery, aroma lamps, toiletries, clothing, handbags, purses the list goes on!  We had a live show from David Gloan and Stuart on the Keyboard and Santa in his grotto!

Festive Floristry Workshop

Staff and residents across our homes were treated to an interactive virtual Christmas-inspired table decorating masterclass, courtesy of talented master florist, Kathryn Delve.

Kathryn is an independent florist based in Somerset, she specialises in creating unique wedding and event flowers.  She takes much of her inspiration for her displays from the beautiful scenery that surrounds her home and the changing seasons and colours.

During the workshop, residents were invited to join Kathryn to make beautiful Christmas-themed table decorations.

Christmas cake baking at Thistle Hill

Residents enjoyed a morning of fun with a Christmas Cake Making event that took place at the home.

A group of ten residents from Thistle Hill’s ‘Baking Club’ gathered and prepared a huge amount of ingredients, which included 36 eggs to make four very large Christmas Cakes while listening to Christmas music and getting into the festive spirit.

Our resident bakers were thrilled at the challenge to create such luxury cakes.  The smell of the ingredients was wonderful.  It was agreed that we would also make a small cake that could be taste tested straight away, so that we would know how the cakes turned out!

Musical Moments

Residents and guests enjoyed a morning of fun with a live music performance that took place at the home. Local entertainer Joanne from Musical Moments performed a selection of remembrance themed classics including We’ll Meet Again and Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag and Smile, Smile, Smile.

Joanne visited residents in bedrooms with her musical repertoire before joining our regular Thursday coffee morning to entertain residents.  Residents in bedrooms joined in with the singing, and clapped along and thoroughly enjoyed their musical visitor.  Everyone sang along at the coffee morning and clapped to the familiar songs also.  The hospitality team at the home provided a spread of sweet and savoury treats for guests to enjoy during the visit.

Walk through a landscape

Residents across our services had a lovely time joining Emily and Marie-Therese from the Wallace Collection, for a virtual introduction to Reubens' Rainbow Landscape.

Residents truly enjoyed the sensory walk through one of the museum’s most famous landscape paintings.

Everyone who joined had a wonderful experience and can’t wait to put their creative skills to the test by painting some landscapes of our their in the coming days!

Spooktacular Halloween

Our residents always love a visit from local children so on Halloween, we organised a spooktacular visit from Red Kite Nursery. The children visited residents to trick or treat, much to the delight of our residents. Their costumes were fabulous!

In the afternoon we had a spooky Halloween afternoon tea, complete with a history of Halloween, Halloween riddles and a Halloween quiz.
