What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"My son arranged for me to have a week's respite holiday so I could visit relatives who lived in the area. It was arranged efficiently but feel because of the circumstances I cannot comment fairly on the facilities and activities. I found the whole experience enjoyable and energising after a difficult few weeks at home where I live alone. On arrival I received a warm welcome and was impressed by the high standard and freshness of the decor - which I noticed continued throughout. I found all the caring staff always friendly and extremely helpful. The food good with nice-sized portions but unfortunately I found the residents antisocial - the few I met in the dining room and others stayed in their rooms."

"We thought that Tennyson Wharf facilities and rooms were excellent. The activities staff made sure my mum was included at all times. Our only concern was the doctor who visited the home requested blood pressure and blood glucose tests three times a day and this was never carried out without my mum buzzing and reminding them."

"After a nightmare week in hospital I needed to gain confidence before returning to live alone. Barchester Tennyson Wharf Care Home had a good reputation so I booked myself in for a week then a second. I have gained confidence, benefited from the good food and kindness and expert care. The home's biggest asset is its staff team who are splendid people, with nothing too much trouble unimportant need to me no patronising. I retired 29 years ago from residential care management, CQC lay inspector and other experience in care for older people. Here is a new concept of care to what I've experienced and I like it. Barchester Tennyson Wharf Care Home is an exceptional place with exceptional staff dealing with a variety of needs for vulnerable people. A good place, thank you."

"As this is my fourth stay at Burton Waters residential home, I think that must speak for itself regarding satisfaction. The staff are always polite and helpful and will go the extra mile to sort out any problems a resident may have. If in the future I should need some temporary assistance of a personal nature away from home, Burton Waters would be my first port of call."

"My children and I have all been very comforted and consoled by the kindness and concern of all of the staff and are super impressed by the treatment that my husband is receiving. We were initially very concerned that my husband was having difficulty settling, but the staff reacted promptly and with great care to our worries to ensure that he receives reassurance and attention which proved invaluable and effective. We are all most grateful."

"My 95-year-old father-in-law was a resident for two weeks of respite care, following a fall and Covid isolation in the hospital, and quickly settled in extremely well. In his first experience of a modern care home, he was very impressed with the care and support he received. Visiting him, the family were warmly welcomed by staff and the management was outstanding in helping and guiding us through a potentially complicated and emotionally charged process. My 90-year-old mother-in-law, who suffers from dementia and Alzheimer's, had also been hospitalised due to Covid and the knock-on effects to her medication, but on release from hospital Barchester Tennyson Wharf were wonderful in organising the transfer, initially to a room on the same floor as her husband, but then a further move to Memory Lane when a room became available. The care, compassion and attention to the details of looking after these family members have been truly exceptional. At every stage, we felt supported by professional and knowledgeable people, for whom nothing seemed too much trouble and who really understood what we were trying to achieve. We are tremendously grateful and can wholeheartedly recommend Barchester Tennyson Wharf Care Home."

"Two weeks respite booked due to mother's shoulder injury, requiring care with most things. Nobody welcomed her on arrival or explained facilities etc. An information book in her room gave the only clues. District nurses, physiotherapy, and assessments booked by the home did not materialise. Resulting in her ulcerated legs worsening (one district nurse visit when four were booked). Despite several requests, she was showered only once. The home is attractive and staff friendly and pleasant. However, the right-hand knows not what the left is doing and the home is not adequately managed. Phone calls, emails, and a handwritten note at reception expressing our concerns were met with excuses. On departing nobody bothered to say goodbye."

"Following a hip replacement, I had a wonderful three weeks of convalescence at Tennyson Wharf. The Hospital's care was definitely sub-standard, so it was with relief and gratitude that I was welcomed into Tennyson Wharf and with the care and sympathy of all staff, who showed a real understanding of my needs. From my first visit to look around until the day I departed, I was met with warmth, friendliness, kindness and compassion. Nothing was too much trouble; the surroundings were soothing and relaxing; the food was first rate and I had some lovely discussions with all sorts of different people. I could stay in my room all day if I wished, or join in with activities as much as I wished; the carers were always accommodating. I can thoroughly recommend Tennyson Wharf, whether for a short stay or permanent residence and I consider myself extremely lucky to have stayed in such a happy, comfortable and accommodating setting, with exceptional staff, even for such a short time."

"My mum moved into Barchester Tennyson Wharf Care Home last October after a successful period of respite care following a broken hip. Last week my mum received the most devastating news, the suicide death of her son. From the moment I rang the home and spoke to the receptionist and then the manager, the entire team have been utterly amazing. The care, concern and thoughtfulness have been outstanding. Planting memorial bushes, flowers, endless chats and encouragement for my mum have made an unbearable time slightly more bearable."

"From the beginning of our friend's residence all staff were very helpful, not only the care staff but kitchen, laundry, domestic, gardening, maintenance and administration staffs. She was treated with dignity throughout her stay. The activities available were appropriate, varied and sensitive. Management of her care was excellent, even when she was aggressive as part of her dementia journey. Liaison with the GP was good. The diet was varied, with menu options each meal. Catering staff responded to specific needs. Towards the end of her life, staff played video messages from a niece living overseas to her, and the parish priest was able to visit her in her room. The room she had throughout was fantastic and met her wishes for space and light with views over the marina. The home was always clean and well maintained. We had no concerns for her safety and welfare. The Covid-19 situation limited visiting for most of the past 18 months, communication with us was excellent. Thank you all."

"My mother-in-law has been here a few times now for respite and arrived home yesterday after her most recent stay. The carehome is in a beautiful spot overlooking the marina, the grounds are lovely with a lot of effort to keep it beautiful, flowers and vegetables growing around the grounds with a lovely seating area. The home smells nice, you can see the residents sitting around the main area chatting and they look very settled and happy. The whole home is beautiful inside, the rooms are lovely, food is three courses, three times a day, a fabulous selection of food, drink, snacks, tailored to the residents. My mother-in-law can be quite "challenging" let's call it and the staff are very sweet with her and ensure she has everything she requires. Good communication from staff and management, nothing too much trouble. It's so refreshing being able to have respite knowing that she is in the best care. Thank you all, see you next year."

"I am extremely satisfied with the care my Mum is receiving at Tennyson Wharf. Any questions, issues, or needs are dealt with promptly and efficiently. Although it is an emotional transition from living in your own home to moving into residential care, it couldn’t have gone any better. We as a family are very grateful for the patience and care of everyone at the home offers Mum. She enjoys the quiz afternoons and particularly enjoyed Burns night (in the afternoon). Thank you all for looking after her and keep up the great work!"

"My mother has struggled with depression since the death of my stepfather 3 years ago, had lost all interest in life and what was happening around her. I discovered that she could go to Tennyson Wharf for the day and suggested it. She has visited various care homes over the years to see friends and relatives and wasn't impressed with the idea but agreed to go and look. One short visit persuaded her to give it a try. I dropped her off at 10 am looking forward to it but slightly nervous as she wouldn't know anyone. I collected her at 4 pm and couldn't believe the difference in her. She walked out with her shoulders back, her head up and she was no longer shuffling like a little old lady. That transformation continued through the following week as she talked daily about what she'd done and when we arrived for the second visit and she was greeted by her name as soon as she set foot in the door I knew it was all going to be ok. She is now planning a stay when I go on holiday."

"Good Points: Comfortable; clean; spacious and relaxing environment. No-one rushing about or shouting - thus keeping stress for residents and visitors to a minimum. Staff are genuinely caring and all seem to know where residents are at any particular time; however, residents are free to 'wander' without being 'told off'. This creates a lovely atmosphere. More like a hotel, to be honest. Menu looks good and creative. Catering staff are very tolerant of late-comers (and the inevitable 'moaners'). Tea and coffee freely available. Visitors are encouraged to self-serve, though staff are always at hand if required. Great views from Mum's room; and the sitting and dining rooms. The room is exactly the right size and is NOT stiflingly hot. Easy to contact a senior member of staff if necessary. Loads of activities, including Mum's favourite - the mum and toddler group Bad Points: Apart from the cost (!), there are NO bad points. I would recommend this Home without any hesitation."

We have found this to be true - everyone has been so kind to mum. The care has been brilliant - my mum has been transformed in one day! "Throughout the 14 months of my relative's residence, I have been extremely impressed with the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. It is clear it is a 'happy ship'. In addition, my relative was treated with courtesy dignity and respect as well as with patience and prompt attention to her needs. No unpleasant smells or disturbing sights. The staff are without fail polite, call residents by name at all times, and are quick to deal with queries. An excellent home. "My mother always stated firmly that she never wanted to go into a home. However, a fall and subsequent hospital stay left her too weak to go home, her Alzheimers had gone into overdrive and respite care was required. Barchester Tennyson Wharf offered amazing space, with large private, ensuite bedrooms, spacious lounges and wide corridors. My mother was used to her own company and privacy and did not want to feel 'packed in'. The quality of the menu, food freshly cooked on the premises and a remarkable variety of choices Sufficient staff (mostly permanent) treated the residents with genuine kindness and dignity The convenience of location - means no traffic problems shortening the time available to visit. After a few days, my mother relaxed, clearly enjoying herself; much to her surprise. The superb food, leisurely meal times during which staff encouraged conversation and interaction. The consistent level of care and attention given to all completely won her over. We strongly recommend this home."

"On arrival, you feel you have entered a 5-star hotel. It does not feel like a care home which is important to a new resident who is afraid of staying in a home. The level of care, the most important, is first class. The standards of accommodation and facilities support the high standard of care. Would I want to stay there? Yes!"

"My mother had a short stay receiving the best palliative care anyone could wish for. Excellent nursing, treated with dignity, compassion and dare I say 'love'. The care also extended to all the family. All I can say is thank you. Our mum's last days were as perfect as we could hope for given how poorly she was."

"Respite care for mum-in-law after a hospital visit (due to a fall). The staff are always smiling, courteous and treated both mum-in-law and family with tolerance and understanding. Facilities and surroundings fabulous, food excellent and a "can-do" attitude made her stay easier for all concerned a reluctant resident she was sad to leave."

"I have the pleasure of visiting one of your residents on a weekly basis and also a couple of other friends who were staying with you for a week to recover from an operation. My personal experience was and is very positive. My friends are always in a happy mood and this reflects how comfortable they are. I love the friendly atmosphere I feel in every visit and also to see other residents having fun with activities for their ability."

"Sadly Tennyson Wharf is very smart but doesn't quite deliver. My father complained of being cold overnight and decided to combat the problem by keeping his clothes on. Why wasn't this solved by turning up the heating and/or using more bedding? We tried ringing him and were told he'd phone back - it never happened. There was more but the above demonstrates the problem."

"If all care were as good as this there would never be any bed blocking again. My wife spent her last days at Tennyson Wharf and I could not praise the staff highly enough. From the boss to the domestic staff they were all superb. They all offered to help and were always pleasant and cheerful. Pricey but worth every penny."

"Tennyson Wharf is an extremely good care home that benefits from an outstanding location by the Birton Waters. The care staff are very friendly and as a visitor, on a regular basis (3-4 times a week) I have been made to feel like one of the family. Sadly Mum doesn't take advantage of the many activities offered but she is treated with dignity and endless patience by those caring for her."

"Since moving my client to Tennyson Wharf Care Home I've noticed a marked change in her mood and health. The care staff are always on hand and regularly check if she needs anything. The choice of activities are brilliant to keep her engaged. My only concern is that often other residents enter her room without asking."

"I came here for two weeks respite care, following the death of my husband and dealing with all of the inevitable paperwork. It has been a peaceful and happy break. The staff are pleasant and helpful and as I am not just old, but ancient, makes life more of a pleasure."

"The home is very clean and modern, most of the staff are friendly but sorry so many have left. All rooms are large and very comfortable and most of the meals look very good. The only thing is the price - very expensive."

"The care home is expensive, sometimes there don't seem to be enough staff to justify the money. But all staff are without exception friendly and competent. Occasionally messages don't get passed on, e.g. about taking residents out. Sometimes the cleanliness of the bathroom and bedroom are not quite up to standard. Activities staff do their best, perhaps not always tailoring to individual residents competencies and wishes. More trips out would be good. Overall the home has a good atmosphere."

"Staff are excellent with a lovely location. I think the home is a fantastic place to be. It is like living in a 5-star hotel. I would book myself into it to be looked after! Staff are all fantastic and are always helpful and everyone contributes to it being a great experience."

"Since my mother's admission (22 months ago) she has been cared for extremely well. The staff are professional and very caring. They are also very helpful and informative when I have needed any up dates regarding my mother's health and care. The building is very well maintained, always very clean and welcoming."

"Above and beyond my/the family's expectations since mum became a resident earlier in the year. It could easily be compared to a 5-star hotel with full board and assisted service. Why can't the rest of the care industry aspire for an equivalent standard to give everyone in this situation the quality of life they deserve."

"All the staff at Tennyson Wharf are kind, compassionate, amiable and supportive. Every effort is made to ensure the dignity and safety of residents. Care of a dearly loved husband could never be the same as if he were still at home looked after and cared for by loving family but this must be the very best next thing. The staff and management are at pains to support both the residents and the family and I'm assured it will become my second home too."

"My husband moved to Tennyson Wharf after being in hospital with a serious stroke which he had 27th Dec 16. The hospital just kept him "bed bound" all day long and he never progressed mentally or physically. Since he has been at Tennyson Wharf you can see he is more comfortable and because of this he is progressing (albeit slowly). He is being hoisted out into his wheelchair and/or recliner chair when he wants to. He now sits and plays dominoes, is writing and reading and is so happy with the regular staff. (Thumbs up every time they come in or go out). All the staff are so very friendly towards him and myself which all contributes to his self-esteem which was very low when he arrived at Tennyson Wharf. I am hoping for a really positive outcome. Before Tennyson Wharf we were all losing hope."

"Before she came to this care home, we visited a couple of others in order to make a comparison. They were not in the same league for all the reasons below. We were very impressed with the care and compassion she received here along with the other residents. Obviously, the hardest thing for all the residents is their loss of independence but in her case, she was definitely unable to care for herself and keep safe at home. When we visit she always seems content and relaxed and has a genuine rapport with carers and residents. Thank you for all you do."

"The staff are very kind and I always find them very helpful, they look after my husband really well. Personal things sometimes disappear and then sometimes reappear, perhaps that's because residents wander into each other's rooms. The home is always spotless and my husband always enjoys his food."

"Very good quality staff. Many extremely caring and committed. Relatively limited movement of staff which is vital, as consistency and familiarity with residents with dementia. Facilities excellent and kept very clean. Rooms great size and very pleasant. Lounges are fabulous with 'proper' furniture...no plastic sets here. The only improvement I'd like to see is more physical activity. My mum has put on a considerable amount of weight, having been very physically fit on entering the home. This seems to be a neglected area. The reception area is sometimes unattended which makes it difficult for visitors to get in."

"After a poor experience of care, my mother moved to Tennyson Wharf Care Home. The difference in care and support has been truly amazing. The staff are caring, compassionate and professional. Nothing is too much trouble. As a relative, I have been involved in all decisions relating to Mum's care. My mother and the rest of the family have always been treated with respect. Facilities are excellent. I would have no hesitation in recommending Tennyson Wharf to anyone with a relative with dementia."

"My partner has been in Tennyson Wharf with dementia since November 2015 and prior to permanence, several times for respite. I can only say that I have been very fortunate to find such a lovely home for him. Everyone there is wonderful - administrative staff and carers alike. The care is fantastic, the food is fantastic, the home is fantastic and my partner is superbly cared for and very happy in his own little world. Can I say anymore! Yes I would recommend - I've told my children that should I need care in the future there is only one place I wish to go!!"

Sincere thanks to each and every one of you for looking after my mum since August 2015. Each member of staff made an impact on Mum and, as a family, we really appreciated it. Considering mum’s communication difficulties, all staff made an effort to get to know and understand her. The ethos of the home providing individualised care and a community reflecting family values was well-valued by us all. It was always a comfort knowing she was well-looked after in Byron View by everyone involved, such as house keepers, catering, administrators and care staff. Thank you all.

To all the wonderful people who work at Tennyson Wharf,

We would like to express our deepest thanks to everyone who helped to look after our ‘mam’ during her stay at Tennyson Wharf. In this, we want to include all staff, nurses, care staff, cleaners, cooks, handymen and gardeners - everyone interacted with her and brought her happiness. When Mum first arrived, everything was new, but you helped her to settle in and make friends. You found out about her interests, in particular that she loved music, and you encouraged her to join in with all the musical activities. Even at the end of Mum’s life, you arranged for members of a choir to sing for her in her room. She missed her husband greatly and you listened as she reminisced about the happy times that she spent with him. As she became ill, Mum’s appetite deteriorated, but you tried to encourage her by offering her a free choice of food and by trying to help her eat small portions. You sat and talked with her as the end approached, holding her hand and offering comfort. We were with Mum constantly during her last week and we are both very grateful for the care and support that you gave us as her next of kin during a very emotional time.

"One should expect the daily contact with the working world to slide, and Tennyson which is a no 1 care home, with superb staff and facilities. I would prefer it being closer to the local services to be reached on foot. I also appreciate why it is not. I would recommend it to anybody."

"Absoloutely home from home. I came to stay for a holiday and I've stayed here. I don't want to go home. My friend is also booked to come next week and I doubt she will go home too. Fabulous care, fabulous food and outstanding staff."
