Activities at Meadowbeck Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Tina Holmes

Lead Activities Co-ordinator

Hi, I’m Tina, and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Meadowbeck.

I began working at the home as a Care Assistant in 1999. In 2014, I changed my role to Social Support Worker, which I enjoyed, as it involved supporting residents at Meadowbeck in their daily lifestyles.

I then became the Activities Coordinator in May 2017. I love working with our residents and getting to know them and their families. In addition to supporting them maintain an active lifestyle I always ensure to personally get to know each resident when they move in with us to support them in the continuation of any hobbies or interests the might have.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Life at Meadowbeck Care Home

Royal Botanic Garden

Our homes enjoyed a wonderful virtual tour of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh with Community Engagement Manager, Charlotte Walker, and Botanic Cottage Operations Co-ordinator, Laura Gallagher.

The residents were thrilled to learn more about the history of the beautiful Garden, which is now a home to an impressive plant collection from around the world.

Charlotte and Laura also gave a demonstration of making fresh herbal tea and were happy to answer our questions.  The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all who joined.

Spa fun

Residents were made to feel relaxed at our pamper evening where they made the most of a little one to one time with our Activities Coordinator in our beauty salon.

They enjoyed the calming experience of the oil diffuser with the sound, scent and gentle glow of the light as they sat back and enjoyed a hand soak with sensory beads, a gentle hand massage to follow with relaxing music playing in the background before choosing which colour nail polish from the selection on offer.

Eileen, likes a bright colour on her nails saying how it makes her feel brighter in herself, whilst waiting for her polish to dry she said she had a wonderful evening feeling very spoilt and pampered, looking forward to showing off her nails.

Delicious pizzas

Residents had fun as they spent the afternoon creating their very own pizzas. Choosing their own preferred toppings from a selection of chopped ingredients to suit their taste. They all did a great job and the pizzas smelt and looked delicious. Edith always enjoyed making them in the past with just the right amount of toppings.

Phyllis says how much she loves a pizza, more so when she has made her own just how she likes it. A lovely afternoon had by all who took part while others enjoyed a slice or two.

Music to Movement

Residents on Memory Lane enjoyed a movement to music session.  These chair based exercises are great for the mind, body, soul and a great way to help keep our residents fit, helping them to stay active, improving coordination, mobility, balance and flexibility of our residents.

We finished off with a little fun with the throw and tell activity ball where each person answers questions when they catch the ball, a great way to stimulate conversations and bringing back memories. Eileen says her favourite smell is Chanel No 5 perfume.

A great morning enjoyed by all who took part.

Summer Party

It was a wonderful day with the sun shining down as the residents were joined by their friends and families, and members of the community.

The day was made extra special by seeing all their great grandchildren playing happily with the garden games provided.

Residents also got the opportunity to have a go on some of the game stalls and made themselves comfortable in making sure they were able to get their favourite staff members in the stocks!

Residents had the opportunity to look through the stalls that we had prepared. Family and friends had all been donating graciously towards the tombola stalls and for the raffles.

We had a “name the teddy” competition, guess the weight and amount of sweets competition and also a lovely cake stall all donated by the home.

One of our resident’s families were kind enough to hand knit a load of blankets and some hand knitted soft toys.

The local ice cream van also came to visit which the residents found a real treat as they got to choose their preferred flavour of ice cream.

Beautiful bouquets

Our homes had a fantastic time joining members of the Wallace Collection for an amazing sensory session.

During the live virtual experience, our residents explored one of the museum’s most beautiful Dutch flower paintings and learnt new drawing techniques.

We cannot wait to put our creative skills to a test and produce beautiful paintings of our own.

Everyone enjoyed the lovely talk, we all had lots of fun and it’s given us plenty of ideas.
