Activities at Highview House Care Home
We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.
Aiden Wylie
Hello, my name is Aiden Wylie, and I am Head Activities Coordinator here at Highview House. My job is to ensure a mentally and physically challenging and varied calendar of activities. I want to involve all our residents in a warm and welcoming environment.
My career has been in education and I have lived in countries as diverse as Japan and Iraq, but in 2022 I came to Highview with the ambition of offering a range of activities, trips and entertainment which lead to lasting memories and experiences.

Activities and Events Partnerships
As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies
Life at Highview House Care Home
Donkey Sanctuary
Across our services, Residents enjoyed a fantastic virtual tour of the Donkey Sanctuary Manchester. Residents were thrilled to meet the lovely herd of donkeys, including Henry and his best friend Tiny Tim and to learn more about their every day care. They were introduced to the sanctuary’s work and the impact they make to the lives of donkeys in need worldwide. The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all.
Royal Botanic Garden
Our homes enjoyed a wonderful virtual tour of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh with Community Engagement Manager, Charlotte Walker, and Botanic Cottage Operations Co-ordinator, Laura Gallagher.
The residents were thrilled to learn more about the history of the beautiful Garden, which is now a home to an impressive plant collection from around the world.
Charlotte and Laura also gave a demonstration of making fresh herbal tea and were happy to answer our questions. The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all who joined.
Wallace Collection
Our homes had a fantastic time joining members of the Wallace Collection for an amazing sensory session.
During the live virtual experience, our residents explored one of the museum’s most beautiful Dutch flower paintings and learnt new drawing techniques.
We cannot wait to put our creative skills to a test and produce beautiful paintings of our own.
Everyone enjoyed the lovely talk, we all had lots of fun and it’s given us plenty of ideas.
Tutti Frutti Thursdays
The staff decided that it would be a great idea to dress up as different fruit and allow our residents to experience the flavours and textures of different types of fruit, some more exotic than others. Among the variety of fruits available to taste were Lychee, Dragon Fruit, Papaya and Kiwis.
All of the residents enjoyed the tasting session and some of the families even joined in too. The staff being dressed up made them laugh and enjoy the afternoon much more.
A breath of fresh air
This morning, on our daily walk, we spoke about Jacks favourite football team and their recent win. He said he doesn’t particularly have a favourite team player as he feels they are all really good. Jack said he used to go to watch the football often, sometimes going through to Glasgow to see his team on their home turf. Jack said he enjoyed the fresh air and was looking forward to his lunch afterwards.
We are so lucky to have such lovely gardens for our residents to enjoy whenever they choose.
Gardening club
Jane loves to get outside and she has been helping us to maintain our vegetables, herbs and plants that we planted a few weeks ago, as you can see they are coming along nicely!
Gardening has a number of benefits for the elderly including strengthening bones, muscles and joints, it also helps the elderly with balance resulting in less falls, keeps blood pressure at bay, helps to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and of course helps keep our minds in a more positive state.
We were delighted to see that our tomatoes strawberry's and cucumbers have grown heaps!
