Activities at Bedewell Grange Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Donna Brooks

Activities Coordinator

My Name is Donna. I am the activities co-ordinator at Bedewell Grange care home Hebburn. I joined Bedewell Grange in April 2022 and I bring lots of new exciting ideas to the role, having worked in the health and social care sector for the last 15 years. I am passionate about my role within the home and aim to bring a smile to all our residents faces through different types of activities. My personality is bright and bubbly so aim to share this each day at work. I have experience in supporting our residents who are more able as well as doing sensory Namaste sessions with our residents who are less able. As I gather the residents likes and dislikes if you would like to come and chat with me about your family member please contact the home to arrange.

Life at Bedewell Grange Care Home

Easter celebrations

He’s a round up of our Easter festivities!  We’ve been making Easter bonnets, all absolutely bursting with colour and flair. Here are some of our ladies with their gorgeous designs.  We then had a little Easter egg hunt on both floors where we found plenty of Easter treats.

Nutrition and Hydration Week

We celebrated Nutrition and Hydration week, which ran from the 14th-20th March this year.  We like to make a big deal of this as we believe it’s a major part of Bedewell community.

Today was cocktail masterclass! Jean really enjoyed making Virgin Mojitos by ripping up mint leaves, squeezing limes and adding sugar and lemonade to the mix. We then made homemade pink lemonade and strawberry and banana smoothies (with plenty of ice cream!)

It was a thumbs up from our ladies and gents!

Namaste care

Recently we have implemented Namaste care into our activity programme. It has been extremely well received so far and will continue to be our gold standard of activity.

What is Namaste care?  Namaste care (pronounced Na-mass-tay) aims to enable staff to cater to the personal needs of residents with advanced dementia, focusing on the person rather than the process and protocol in a holistic manner. It involves a range of physical, sensory and emotional approaches.

These approaches support residents with advanced dementia in many activities, for example managing pain, making sure they are getting enough to eat and drink and use of music to manage anxiety and stress.

St Patrick's Day

This year we planned St Patrick’s day around Nutrition and Hydration week, concentrating on plenty of fluid and nibbles.

Earlier on in the week, Sylvia helped make gorgeous shamrock spiced biscuits for us to have for today’s morning trolley - which consisted of Baileys Irish hot chocolate or Irish coffee, topped with whipped cream and chocolate.

Later on we had a pub afternoon - where we enjoyed Guinness, Baileys on the rocks and shandies, with some very cool pub grub - Guinness crisps and Baileys chocolate yum!

We hope you’ve had a day as tasty as ours!

The Astor's at Cliveden

Our residents came together to enjoy an exciting virtual talk courtesy of the team at National Trust Talks Service.  The illustrated talk took us closer to one of Cliveden’s most famous families, the Astors. Our residents were able to discover what motivated William Waldorf Astor, America’s richest man, to purchase Cliveden in 1893 and how the estate became the centre of high society in the 1920 s and 30 s thanks to his son Waldorf and daughter in law Nancy Astor.

The Collection

We had a lovely time joining Holly and Marie-Therese from the Wallace Collection, for a virtual introduction to the Collection, followed by a sensory exploratory walk through one of the museum’s most famous landscape paintings.   The Collection ranges from Old Master paintings to 18th century French furniture, arms and armour.  We all had a wonderful time and cannot wait to put our creative skills to a test and paint some landscapes in the upcoming days.
