Activities at West Abbey Care Home

Our Activities Coordinators are constantly striving to mentally and physically stimulate those we support by organising group and individual activities for anyone and everyone to participate in. There are regular outings in the minibus to nearby places of interest, as well as visits from the Donkey sanctuary, musicians and entertainers. We also host evenings such as our Cheese & Wine evenings and BBQ's in the summer, that we encourage relatives to come to. Activities are one of the most important aspects of a care home, so it is essential that our team are dedicated to ensuring that residents are entertained. We encourage our residents to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can to ensure that life at West Abbey is fun and active for all.

Ryan Palmer

Activities coordinator

Hello, I'm Ryan and I joined West Abbey in 2018 in Hotel Services team where I was nominated 2 years running in the Barchester Care Awards by residents and their families. I moved to Activities in June 2021 which suits my outgoing personality. I know our residents well and love seeing their enjoyment of the entertainment we provide plus going out into the community on our mini bus, I have lived in Yeovil all my life so know all the best places to visit. The team call me the 'IT hero' as I'm always able to resolve the connection issues with our virtual events and our computer / tablets!

Life at West Abbey Care Home

Trip to France

Following our recent virtual visit to Venice, Italy. we all made our way to the First Class Departure Lounge at West Abbey for snacks and refreshments before take-off and before we knew it, touched down in our next destination, France! Residents were treated to a themed lunch of French onion soup, followed by beef bourguignon! Our trip continued with a guided sight-seeing tour of the most popular places which included the Eiffel Tower and during our visit, we made time to sample the French themed snacks and a glass of wine.

Nail Technician Visit

Here at West Abbey our residents love being pampered and we really look forward to our regular visits from Nail Technician, Meg. The nail designs this week focused on everything Easter - our nails had chick, Easter Eggs and spring flowers! We can't wait to invite Meg back in.

Scout Donation

Here at West Abbey we have held a community and resident Bingo evening to raise money for our local Scouts. Our local Scouts, know as the Europe Explorers have been given the chance to travel round Europe and see as many places they can within the 21/2 weeks they are away staying in hostels, camping and maybe one treat of staying in a hotel. The money we have raised and donated will help the young Scouts with their travels.

Music for the Soul

We have welcomed in a singer here at West Abbey and everyone loved it! Music can improve mood, decrease pain and anxiety, and facilitate opportunities for emotional expression. Research suggests that music can benefit our physical and mental health in numerous ways and can help with a variety of illnesses and disease processes – from anxiety, depression and stress, to the management of pain and enhancement of functioning after degenerative neurologic disorders.

School Play

Here at West Abbey we were honoured to be invited to Preston Primary Schools performance of Alice in Wonderland! All of the children performed incredibly well and our residents loved watching them. A huge well done to the students at Westfield Academy for making the props, they looked fantastic.

Pet Therapy

We want to say a massive congratulations to our Pet Therapy Dog (Harry) and his fabulous own Helen, you both bring so much joy to our residents every two weeks, but behind the scenes they have been working very hard on getting Harry to and exceptional level to win . So that brings us to say Harry won 3rd at Crufts 2024!
