Activities at Overslade House Care Home

Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.

Our activities team is dedicated to organising a variety of events and activities and adapting them to suit the capabilities of those we support. Our goal is to improve quality of life by providing activities that are tailored to residents' own interests.

At Overslade House, we encourage local people and businesses to participate, as well as our staff and relatives, in order to keep them involved as part of a wider community. We strive to enhance the quality of both mental and physical stimulation through weekly minibus excursions, PAT dogs, quizzes, Zumba classes, arm chair line dancing, musical entertainers, pamper sessions and much more.

We definitely have something for everyone!

Julie Bateman

Activities Lead

Hi, my name is Julie, and I'm the lead Activities Lead here at Overslade House. I've been an entertainer for over 25 years which has given me a great foundation for meeting people from various backgrounds, and has also helped nurture my social skills.

I love animals, and have two Dachshunds of my own who, like me, love meeting new people. I'm looking forward to bringing them in to meeting all our lovely residents here at Overslade.

I'm a bit of a social butterfly and enjoy visiting National Trust locations, attending the Theatre, singing and dining out. Over the years I've even been an 'extra' on TV!

Living life to the full is my motto, and I wish to instil this in all our residents, whatever your ability there is something new to learn or try. Life is for enriching and enjoyment. I look forward to getting to know you and your loved ones. We are always open to new ideas, if you'd like to contact me please call the home on 01788 522577 or email me direct on overslade.activities@barchester.com - New entertainers always welcome.

RAF Live Virtual Event

To celebrate Black History Month, we were treated to an hour in the company of Community Engagement Manager, Rhiannon Watkinson, from the RAF Museum in Hendon, London.  Residents enjoyed an interactive talk exploring the fascinating lives of some incredible African and Caribbean personnel.

Residents were able to discover the story of the first Black pilot who trained and flew for Britain, take in the trials and triumphs of a female Second World War instrument repairer and marvel at a modern-day fighter pilot’s journey from Woolwich to earning his wings.  The talk included photographic material from the Museum’s archive and a Q&A session where residents grilled Rhiannon about the amazing stories they had heard.

Rhiannon explained: “I think people are quite often surprised to learn that throughout its history The RAF has included members from all over the world.  I was delighted to have the opportunity to talk to residents and tell them the stories of some of the different personnel that have contributed to the RAF’s rich history and answer all their questions.”

Bex Vernon, Resident Experience Coordinator, commented: “We are excited to work with wonderful partners like The RAF Museum London to bring a wide range of fantastic experiences into our homes for all to enjoy. We’re so grateful to Rhiannon for sharing her expert knowledge with us.

Harvest Festival

Overslade House celebrated Harvest Festival by attending a church service within the home hosted by Gifts of Years.  Gifts or Years are volunteers from the local church who visit weekly to offer spiritual and emotional support to our residents. Pam and Cecil conduct room visits weekly and Angela also attends weekly to teach new songs and hymns to our residents.  Preparations have been underway for weeks to learn songs for the Harvest Festival. Overslade House are also fortunate to have monthly visits from Rev Alan Hulme to conduct Holy Communion.

Residents at Overslade House enjoyed attending the service with friends and family and members of the local community.  The home had collected a wonderful hamper of different foods and fresh produce to donate at the event along with all the other offerings from families, schools and community groups.

Ann, resident at Overslade House said: “I love Harvest Festival, it reminds me of so many church services I’ve attended over the years.  I loved singing hymns and seeing the children bring all their offerings to place on the altar.  It is lovely to think that ‘all is safely gathered in’ for another year.”

World Animal Day

Staff and residents at Overslade House were having a whale of a time when they celebrated World Animal Day on October 4th.

World Animal Day is an annual global event to celebrate all animals across the world.  It aims to raise awareness of the importance of animal welfare and endeavours to raise standards for all animals around the globe.

Residents had a brilliant time learning about all different kinds of animals and their habitats, they watched nature programmes, and held a quiz about the different collective nouns for animals some of which were bizarre! Overslade House also held a Pet Portrait Competition and had a wonderful time picking their favourite our winner was Pepper a cockapoo owned by our resident Wayna’ s granddaughter.

John, a resident said: “I love all animals so it was such a treat to meet Pepper and look at the pictures of all the other entrants it was very difficult to choose a winner as they were all lovely.  I really enjoyed the quiz we had too – who knew the collective noun for crows was a murder?!”
