Activities at Meadowbeck Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Tina Holmes

Lead Activities Co-ordinator

Hi, I’m Tina, and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Meadowbeck.

I began working at the home as a Care Assistant in 1999. In 2014, I changed my role to Social Support Worker, which I enjoyed, as it involved supporting residents at Meadowbeck in their daily lifestyles.

I then became the Activities Coordinator in May 2017. I love working with our residents and getting to know them and their families. In addition to supporting them maintain an active lifestyle I always ensure to personally get to know each resident when they move in with us to support them in the continuation of any hobbies or interests the might have.

Cheese and Wine Evening

We hosted our cheese and wine evening for our residents to sample a selection of tasty cheeses including a Danish Blue, Stilton, creamy Brie with a side of brandy, apple and pear chutney all accompanied with a glass of wine (or two) from a fruity red, crisp white or a light rose.

Our residents look forward to these evenings where they enjoy a little social time, with lovely conversations flowing and lots of laughter as they reminisced of places they had visited with Holland and Venice been the main topic of the evening.

Medical Detection Dogs

Across our services residents had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Emilia from Medical Detection Dogs.

Emilia took us on a journey to discover how the organisation began training dogs to support people with complex health conditions, saving their lives on a daily basis.

Using their amazing sense of smell, these dogs can identify odour changes emitted prior an episode and alert the person to take preventative action.

We were introduced to the wonderful dogs and the science behind the sniff.  It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our canine-loving residents.

Musical Moments

Staff and residents were delighted to welcome back Maggie from Musical Moments into our home.

Everyone joined in the fun, singing and moving to the music using a selection of sensory props and musical instruments and enjoying a lovely solo piece played by Maggie on her euphonium. It was great to see so many smiles and hear so much laughter. Our residents just love music and Maggie brings so much fun into her sessions.

National Flower Day!

Residents took part in flower-based activities throughout the day including a flower arranging competition. Residents reminisced about the gardens they have kept throughout the years, which everyone really enjoyed.  Their collective knowledge about flowers gained from years of gardening experience was very impressive.

Annaliza Kemp, General Manager at Meadowbeck said: “Our garden is a much loved space, residents really enjoy looking after the plants and flowers and watching them grow and change through the seasons. We don’t have many flowers at the moment so our residents very much enjoying the escapism of virtually visiting some of the most famous gardens in the world.”

Barchester's Big Quiz

All over the country our care homes and hospitals linked up for Barchester’s Big Quiz of the year!

Residents tested their knowledge with a variety of questions, from historical humdingers and musical musings to pictorial puzzlers and connective conundrums.

Everyone who participated had a fantastic time and enjoyed some friendly competition.

Residents put on their blue suede shoes!

We celebrated Elvis Presley’s birthday, our residents were treated to an afternoon of music as they gave a warm welcome to Glen Booth, from Osbaldwick and Murton Churches who kindly entertained everyone.

Residents sang and clapped along to well-known Elvis hits and Glen made all the ladies day as he went around the crowd serenading to the ladies, all very much big Elvis fans.

Rose, a resident said: “I loved Elvis growing up.  Listening to all his old hits has brought back so many memories.  We’ve all had a brilliant time, we were all made to feel very special indeed as we were serenaded!”
