Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Virtual Christmas Jumper/T-Shirt and Outfit competition

Thank you to everyone who took part in our Virtual Christmas Jumper/T-Shirt and Outfit competition. Our residents have loved seeing all of your entries and feel such a special connection with the community from helping to pick the winners.

It was a very close decision and as always they would love to have awarded all of you as winners.

It was such a close decision that we did have a two ties. We have decided to award 6 prizes and can reveal the winners below.

All of the winners have been notified and will receive their prize very soon.

Thank you all, once again for supporting this event. We will have more opportunities to engage in our virtual events, next year.

Lucerne House Christmas Grotto

This month we have loved welcoming back the children, parent helpers and teachers from Alphington Primary School to our Christmas grotto.

Our grotto was open to Foundation, year one and year 2 and had various activities to enjoy, including making reindeer food, writing cards to Santa and an elf scavenger hunt. To top it all off, children were greeted by our resident elves, in their workshop and then got to meet Santa who gave each of them a gift.

On Thursday, the weather was very poor but we were delighted to bring Santa and his elf helpers to the school to the year 2 classes. This meant that all the children were able to make their reindeer food, see Santa and receive there gift. Thank you to the school for enabling us to do this and a special thank you to the helpers at the school on Thursday, who helped the children make the reindeer food and share the magic of Christmas.

We have had such a lovely week and feel truly blessed to have such a lovely connection with our community and school.

Lucerne House Christmas market

We have had the most amazing evening at our first ever Lucerne Christmas market.

We had lots of stalls, showcasing the amazing craft work our team and residents have been making, as well as other items to purchase including the body shop, homemade mince pie flavour fudge our head chef made, cakes, bratwurst, hot dogs, jewellery made by Chloe and so much more.

We would like to thank Elaine Bowler for her body shop items, our head chef for all his baked and cooked items, Sue Broom for all of her help with activities and events in the lead up to the market and her donations to the raffle, Amber and Amelia for selling the jewellery, Chloe and Sasha for serving refreshments and to Simon for helping to clear up once it was all finished. We also thank all of the visitors and friends of the home for their donations and contributions to the market and raffle.

The raffle has been drawn and we will be contacting the winners in the coming days to collect their prizes.

With all of the purchases this evening, though a final count is yet to be fully completed, we can announce we have raised over £400 which will be split and donated to the Alzheimer's Society and Parkinson's UK.

Finally, our activities team have done a great job with this event and their efforts today have been brilliant, but, we must particularly highlight our amazing Kirsty Pillinger. Kirsty has been the driving force behind this event, supporting residents to get involved through crafts, baking, setting up, stock sorting, making labels and more. She has been an inspiration to the home and we want to thank and congratulate her for an amazing, first of many we hope, Lucerne Christmas market.

Our Regional Care Awards Finalist

We are incredibly proud of our Head of Ide Nursing community, Ron Jampil, for being a finalist in the Regional Care Awards for Nurse of the year.

Ron attended a Gala evening with Sally Coletti, General manager and Alex Petersen, Head of Activities at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol.

It was an amazing event with tribute acts, a fantastic three course meal, live band and the awards ceremony, all compered by "Towies" own James Argent.

Although Ron wasn't successful on the night, we are forever proud of him. Being selected as a finalist recognises his passion to make every day, extra special for the residents he cares for, the inspiration he delivers to his team and his dedication to the profession. Ron will always be a winner to us and we are lucky to have him at Lucerne House.

Hitting the High Street

Vera and Mary had a lovely time in Exeter town centre this morning. We visited all of their favourite hot spots, including Krispy Kreme's, Primark, Marks and Spencer’s followed by lunch at Chop Stix.

They have had a great laugh and it was also a great chance for the girls to try some new looks. Look out for Mary in her snake skin boots with tinsel scarf, beige hat, sequin jacket and leather coat.
