Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Valentine’s celebrations at Lucerne House

Happy Valentine's Day to all of you from everyone at Lucerne House.

Our residents have been busy preparing for the big day. On the Monday 12th February, our Memory Lane community was full of all things floral as we joined the Live Virtual Event of Valentine's flower arranging. Kathryn Delve talked us through her processes on how to create a Valentine's display which we then used to inspire our own arrangements..

Our residents enjoyed flexing their creativity and made some wonderful displays, ready for Valentine's day.

On Valentine’s Day, our residents have had a wonderful time, which began with a harp recital from Luc Walpot. Luc played various classical pieces as well as some popular love songs, to get us in the mood.

Then, in the afternoon, we had our Valentine's tea party, complete with chocolate dipped strawberries, baileys, prosecco, sweat treats and a Valentine's quiz to test our knowledge.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today, it made it all the more special sharing Valentine's day with you.

Lucerne Social Dinner Event

What a fantastic time we have had at our Social night dinner event.

Residents were greeted with their choice of fizz or orange juice before sitting down to dine with a selection of meats, cheeses, breads, crackers and fruits, all washed down with wine and even a cheeky baileys.

This was followed with a selection of sweet treats which perfectly complimented the meal.

Our residents have said it was lovely to be chatting and sharing such a lovely occasion with each other. The event was thought up by some of our female residents, who wanted to try something a little different that would be a great benefit and experience for others, living at Lucerne House

It has been a real success and they are already plotting their next event.

Lucerne out and about in 2024

We have kicked off the New Year with lots of new events, entertainers and activities at Lucerne House. This has included making the most of our local community and Mini Bus.

We have been enjoying weekly trips to our local café, resumed our outings to St Michael’s Church for Knit & Natter and also explored the wider area. Residents have enjoyed trips to garden centres, local shops, high street and had quality time, with loved ones at our local pub.

Its only February and our feet have barely touched the ground. We are only just getting warmed up. We have many more outings planned which our residents are all really looking forward too.

Burns Night

Happy Burns Night from all of us at Lucerne House.

Our Burns Night events kicked off this morning at our cooking group, where we made Cranachan.

Cranachan is a Scottish pudding made with whipped cream, honey, whiskey, toasted oats and raspberries.

Then, in the afternoon, we enjoyed a Scottish themed social event, trying various Scottish treats, including:- short bread, caramel bars, tea cakes, potato cakes, cock-a-leekie soup and Irn Bru. We also had a quiz to really test out knowledge and Scottish music which, of course, included Auld Lang Syne.

To finish the day, we enjoyed our Burns Night meal. Alfred, one of our residents "addressed the haggis" before we tucked into Haggis with Neaps and Tatties, followed by our Cranachan.

It's been a lovely day and we would like to thank our residents for joining in the fun, our visitors for spending time with us, our care teams for supporting our residents to enjoy the day and our brilliant chef for making our wonderful burns Night meal.

A new project begins

Towards the end of last year, our residents, visitors and staff were all busy, making items to sell at our Christmas market. We had a great time, making all of the various items and have proudly raised over £600 which will be split between the Alzheimer's Society and Parkinson's UK.

With that in mind, we needed a new project to build towards. We can now reveal that we are hosting a summer fete, at Lucerne House, with a date to be determined for June or July.

Today to begin preparations, our residents, visitors and staff have been crafting our bird houses. These have been sanded and received their first coating of paint. We will finish painting, assembling and varnishing in the coming weeks, ready to sell at our fete.

We have lots more to craft and make in our crafts sessions, which will resume next week and run on a weekly basis right up until summer.

Thanks to everyone who helped with today's efforts.

Elvis Presley Birthday celebrations

Happy Birthday to the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley.

Born on January 8th 1935, he grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi. Elvis changed the landscape of Rock and roll with his first hit Heartbreak Hotel in 1958. He went on to have major success with classics including "Love me tender", "Devil in disguise" and "Jailhouse Rock" to name a few.

To mark this occasion, residents have enjoyed an Elvis celebration afternoon, with an Elvis Quiz, an Elvis tribute performance from Alex, Head of Activities and sampling the Elvis Sandwich which consists of banana, peanut butter and bacon on toasted bread.

Our residents said they had a lovely time and particularly enjoyed it when the care team joined in for a boogie.
